I Am A Tree Planted by Streams of Water

Psalm 1:3 

“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all he does, he prospers.” 

Busyness in everyday life can easily wear us out. I could not help but pausing and seeking strength from the above. I cannot do all these alone—dissertation writing, job search, papers writing, prep for teaching, serving at church, traveling, etc. 

As the heat of the summer goes up, the sentiment derived from friends’ departure arises. Our small group perhaps will no longer meet in the fall. Almost all veteran members had already switched out to different stage or task. The “pain of growing” is evident. Everyone follows God’s calling and take up new journeys. Praise be to the One who moves. 

As I search for calmness from His word, I thought of Psalm 1. The image presented by the words is serene: a tree, streams of water, fruit, leaf, and prosperity. Behind the scene is the invisible hand and actions needed to fulfill the promise. The bottom line and what I am holding on to is His promise, His faithfulness, and His mercy and blessings. I know He wants me to move forward with Him, with determination. So, my prayer is that the Spirit in me will reign in me, that the confidence in His plan will grow and be strengthened, that He will refine me to bear the fruit of perseverance.
