Save money or save time and energy? God surprised me with an
extra opportunity to teach at my home institute in the Spring 2013, which I
almost jumped to my feet and said “Yes” upon receiving the email. From all
realistic perspectives, this seemed to be a good fit for me. I got to continue
my connections with my professors, worked in a familiar environment and knew
available resources, had a teaching assistant, and with a good pay and being
back to where I received my degree to teach a course that I have been teaching
was just a nice and seemingly easy thing to do.
My sister reminded me the most important thing is whether I
love teaching or not, rather than letting financial pressure decide my future
for me. Surprisingly, I felt no financial burden. My husband’s job was stable
and descent, by God’s grace. Our spending habits are thankfully within
reasonable boundary. I am glad that I decided to accept the opportunity because
my heart called me to, because I surrendered the decision in front of God, and
God in return delivered peace in my heart and through my husband.
My very wise sister has long come to realize that living an
economic but elegant life is much better than a frugal life. What is the
difference? The former emphasizes on good quality choices over quantity, while the
latter focuses more on quantity at the expense of time and efforts (or energy).
Though she was concerned that I accepted the job out of financial need, I was
fully aware that my excitement had a lot more to do with my pride than the
economic temptation.
This economy is definitely not any job candidate’s best
buddy. Yet, God has blessed me with abundant provision for what I need.
Fortunately, my husband and I normally do not go out of our way to save money, and
occasionally whenever we need or crave for a little bit luxury, we are
fortunate enough to be able to afford it. Of course, God does not shy from
calling us to give back to His kingdom either. Whenever we sense God’s
calling—through our discussion with each other or with our friends, we do our
best to respond and take action. Sometimes I wonder, God has granted me the
best life ever, what is the next challenge lurking around the corner and when
will that lion suddenly spring to my face?
Gratefully, when my sister posted the question (are you
working this job because you need to or you want to?), I knew that time or
energy or money all came from God. It is not up to me to hoard any of them.
However, it is my responsibility and privilege to manage and steward God’s
blessings.
Father, thank you, for being so gracious and generous.
Remind me to remember your grace and generosity when the circumstances change.
Thank you.
