Sixty plus faces directing toward me; my shaky voice was dry
and my throat was tight. I finally started teaching. It is a basic requirement
course. Understandably, some are taking the course because they have to. Still,
I am amazed that some of them know quite a bit about the subject already, and
most of them are looking at me waiting for me to say something important.
Occasionally, their smiles soothe my nerve (only when my joke works its random
wonder).
I still believe the best way to learn is to teach. Lecturing
in class is one kind, and writing research paper is another. Take language
skill for example. My sisters commented on my slowly deteriorating Mandarin and
I am eager to improve my English all the time (I wish I could master the
language to the extent that I no longer need to worry about my grammar in
conversation). In one way, I am gratefully humbled by the opportunity. Though
my oral expression is not as good as natives, my students still put up with me.
For that, I really appreciate and cherish them.
Though I am teaching, I learn more than my students do. I
love my husband’s curiosity. He is always eager to learn new info about home
improvement and gadgets. On the contrary, sometimes I feel “it’s just life” and
reluctant to learn something new unless I need to use it. Through teaching, I
am in fact learning a lot more about American history and the formation of this
country.
I learn to appreciate the life that’s been given by God.
Life is good. As the heat rolls on, God has blessed my friends and me a “cool”
working fields. Accidentally (or, is it?) I came across a Shakespeare quote
about friendship. To me, it highlights the continual growth (spiritually and
mentally): “A friend is one that knows you as you are, understand where you
have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”
At a college student Sunday meeting, Debra commented on
God’s creation: “Though God saw his creation good, He did not stop there. He
only stopped when the plan was complete.” She taught me that even God did not
stop at “it is good,” but only until “it is very good.”
My friends, learn on, grow on, for life has so much to offer!
Praise the Maker, the One who is able!
