Chichi, the afternoon squirrel

Chichi lay on his belly under the tree shade. It was not that hot yet. It was just about 84 Fahrenheit degree outside. The sun was not strong yet, but was warm enough to spread the news of summer approaching. There was more heat in the air than a few days ago. Chichi languidly made his daydreams while idling. Ah, that was the way life should be.

Tess went out for a short walk. Actually, that was a break from school work. Clark Field, that was the name of the place she walked around. It was on campus. Though one side was surrounded by dorms, the grass on the field was green, the sky above was blue, the clouds in-between were white, scattering around, following the wind, and the breeze came and gone. Trees were dressed with spotty colors. Some trees were bearing fruits already. She stared hard to see if the seeds were still inside the pod. No, they were gone, most of them. Hopefully, they would land somewhere with fertile soil, and plenty of sunshine.

It was a little bit passed two in the afternoon. She could not concentrate any more. “If you are not happy indoors, then go outdoors.” Struggling with her anxiety was in vain, as always. She at least knew this about herself. “Take action. Stop just thinking in your head.” So she put on her sun glasses and left her office. The weather was beautiful. Maybe it was a call from the sun to her heart. She amused herself.

Not many people in the field, as usual. She walked with a rigid speed in the beginning, and then dropping her thoughts along the steps. She slowed down and looked around wherever she landed her feet. One squirrel was digging something, seemingly looking for food. On the opposite side of that squirrel, Tess met Chichi.

Hearing footsteps, Chichi’s ears straightened. His eyes were wide open for a little while. Tess looked at Chichi and smiled. After staying still for a few seconds, Tess did not think Chichi would move much at all. She sat on the ground, staring at Chichi, smiling. At the moment her butt reached the cemented ground, she knew Chichi was trying to get away from the hot air. Out of nowhere, Tess dropped tears. She frowned. “Just another attack of tiredness,” thought she. She needed a lot of oxygen to refresh her mind.

Her deep breath stirred Chichi’s nap. Chichi raised his head about half inch up, one side of his eyelids kept falling. Tess laughed. Chichi’s eyes were wide open again. The spot that sunshine laid on Chichi’s back started to heat up. Chichi crawled one step forward. The breezed moved the leaves, and changed the shape of the sunny spot on Chichi’s back and confused Tess. She held her breath to see if Chichi was breathing hard, or it was the wind. She could not tell. But Tess thought Chichi was absolutely adorable. She almost laid her pawn upon Chichi’s back, which seemed to be soft and warm. Another half-inch move. Chichi’s eyes were changing between wide open and closed to a line. Something in the tree behind Chichi caught his attention. He stood up and turned around, one step at a time. Gradually, the little bush submerged Chichi.

Tess smiled. “Yeah, you got enough rest. It is time to start another adventure.” She sat until she completely lost Chichi. “It’s my turn. I shall go for mine now.” She stood up, finished the one-third circle, and took stairs back to her office. Half way through the stairs, she turned around, looked at the field with full of respect. She smiled. “Thank you,” in her mind, she bowed to the universe.
