此首《The House of the Rising Sun》( 日昇之屋 ) 原是英國民謠，後傳入美國，而原作者已不可考，自1933年代起即陸續有多人錄唱發行。

至於稱之為「Rising Sun」的這間房子，基本上有兩種說法。一指為紐奧良的一所「妓院」，歌詞則為述說淪落煙花女子的哀嘆。另一說是紐奧良的「女子監獄」，理由係來自歌詞中的「ball and chain」，但此說法採信的人不多。而各翻唱者或多或少都會加入自己的歌詞，且歌曲的主題也有被改為是男性的境遇。

1964，英國的The Animals ( 動物合唱團 ) 隨美國歌手Chuck Berry等在英國巡演，其他歌手團體等都是演唱當時流行的曲風，The Animals的主唱Eric Burdon為了給觀眾特殊的印象，將他早前就已聽過的這首《The House of the Rising Sun》予以重新編曲及修改部份歌詞 ( 最成功的部份當然是吉他稱之為琶音的分解合弦奏法、電風琴的solo以及主唱高亢的唱腔 )，作為該樂團表演的結束曲，而觀眾的反應也相當的熱烈。Eric Burdon見此情況，說服原來不太情願的製作人，利用巡演的空檔，在倫敦的一間小錄音室，只花了15分鐘，一次 ( one take ) 就錄製完成。此曲於1964分別在英、美發行，均奪得了排行榜的冠軍，不僅是The Animals的成名曲，也等於是該樂團的代表作。

其實，當時仍為民謠歌手的Bob Dylan在1961就已錄唱此曲，並收錄在他首張的專輯中，而The Animals的版本，基本上就是部份參考Dylan的版本而來。據Animals的鼓手John Steel說，Bob Dylan曾告訴他，他首次聽到Animals的版本是在車上的收音機，他將車停下來聽，然後「跳出車外」並「猛拍車蓋」( 是懊惱？覺得自己的創意竟然沒有別人發揮得好？或是體悟民謠吉他的音效終究敵不上電吉他？)。這首歌很可能是影響Dylan要離開「民謠」，決定走「電吉他搖滾」的重要因素。
