Stroll among Historical Sites: Eastern Taipei

Stroll among Historical Sites: Eastern Taipei

Walking in the frantic metropolis of Taipei, you’re often apt to happen across traces of the past, like frozen moments of previous eras.

For example, the Gothic-style Jinan Presbyterian Church on Zhongshan South Road is one of the oldest Christian churches in Taiwan. Originally the Taihoku College of Commerce during the Japanese colonial era, National Taiwan University College of Law is one of the city’s model works of Western classical architecture.

Located in a quiet alley off Tai’an Street, the Li Kuo-ting Residence is a classic Japanese-style house of the 1930s, recognized as a municipal historical site. Once home to Taiwan’s “father of technological development” Li Kuo-ting, it stands as a witness to the island’s industrial, political and cultural growth.

Huashan 1914 Creative Park, originally a distillery established by Japan's Houjou Corporation, preserves the architectural dynamism of early 20th-century industry, and today serves as a major center for the arts.

Last but not least, the red brick building in the center of the National Taipei University of Technology campus is a perfect setting for tranquil contemplation. Built around 1918, it exudes an air of solid, prudent simplicity.

Suggested route: NTU College of Law → Huashan 1914 Creative Park → National Taipei University of Technology campus → Jinan Presbyterian Church → The Li Kuo-ting Residence

Nearby MRT Stations: MRT Shandao Temple Station, and Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station on the blue line.
