A Journey for the Taste Buds: Monga Night Market

A Journey for the Taste Buds: Monga Night Market

One of the earliest Han Chinese settlements in the Taipei Basin, the district of Wanhua was originally called “Monga,” which means “dugout canoe” in the language of the indigenous people who once lived here. The oldest part of Monga was centered around today’s intersection of Guiyang Street Sec. 2 and Huanhe S. Road Sec. 2, near the No. 1 floodgate. With the outbreak of hostilities between immigrants from Fujian Province’s Zhangzhou and Quanzhou areas, more and more people flooded into Monga seeking refuge, and the town soon flourished, forming the foundation of Taipei City today.

Monga still preserves trading activities and local markets as in olden times. The night markets along Huaxi Street and Guangzhou Street offer a panoply of traditional foods and delicious snacks, which attract numerous visitors from both Taiwan and abroad.

Suggested routes: Guangzhou St. → Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market → Wuzhou St.Xiyuan Rd.Guiyang St.Xichang St.

MRT Station: Longshan Temple Station
