The Charms and Elegance of Tianmu – a writer’s stroll of the senses

 

While best known as an enclave of Taiwan's expatriate community – both Taipei American School and Taipei Japanese School are located here – Tianmu also abounds with greenery, as it borders on Yangmingshan, one of Taiwan’s eight national parks.

 

With its natural attractions, such as Huang Creek running through the area, Tianmu offers a high quality of life found in few other places in Taiwan. Tianmu’s connection with the foreign community dates back to the 1960s, when the area played host to the United States military. If you wish to learn more about Tianmu’s past, you have to visit Tianmu’s “White House,” a former residence for American military personnel located close to Tianmu Park.

 

But as time moves on, Tianmu is constantly reinventing itself. Another luxury housing development appears, another shop vanishes. What remains the same, however, is that those who live in Tianmu are those who enjoy living. Otherwise, you wouldn’t fall in love with Tianmu to begin with.

 

Suggested route: The White House → Tianmu luxury housing district → Tianmu Weekend Market → Zhongshan North Road Sections 6 and 7 → Taipei American School → Tianmu East Road

 

Nearby MRT stations: Zhishan Station or Shipai Station, bus transfer to Tianmu commercial district.
