先來聽這首美國傳統民謠《Man of Constant Sorrow》，影音中的樂器組合即是所謂的「藍草樂隊」( 一般為還有曼陀林，而此樂隊以共振腔吉他取代。 )。曾翻唱此曲的大牌歌手也不少，有Bob Dylan、Joan Baez、Judy Collins以及Peter, Paul and Mary等，唯歌名各有所不同。

認識上面影音中拉小提琴的女生嗎？她是美國藍草 / 鄉村歌手Alison Krauss。不談Alison Krauss在樂壇上的其他成就，僅以她曾贏得27座葛萊美獎，即在歷來所有從事音樂的女性中獨佔鰲頭 ( 女性第2名為Beyonce / 20座 )；若再包含男性，則是和Quincy Jones併列排名第 2 ( 冠軍為Georg Solti / 31座 )。

此首《When You Say Nothing at All》共有三個知名的版本，首錄發行者為Keith Whitley，1988拿下了鄉村榜的冠軍。遺憾的是，由於Whitley長期酗酒，在次年 ( 1989 ) 5月因急性酒精中毒暴斃 ( 34歲 )，無緣見到這首歌兩次的再度翻紅。

Alison Krauss在1995翻唱此曲，收錄在向Keith Whitley致敬的專輯《Keith Whitley：A Tribute Album》中 ( 專輯為多位歌手分別翻唱Keith Whitley的歌曲 )。Alison Krauss的版本在鄉村榜為第3名 ( 熱門榜 #53 )，看似成績只是「尚佳」，卻為她贏得了一座「年度最佳單曲」的葛來美獎 ( 當年共得了4座 )。1999，愛爾蘭男歌手Ronan Keating為了電影《Notting Hill》( 台譯：新娘百分百 ) 錄唱此曲，稍後也發行此曲作為其獨唱事業的首支單曲，在英國、愛爾蘭、紐西蘭均奪得排行榜冠軍，並在英國被認證為「金唱片」。

台灣天后級的歌手蔡依林也有翻唱版，可惜未能在國際上造成轟動。
