1968年，美國黑人人權領袖馬丁路德金恩及美國總統羅勃甘迺迪相繼遭到暗 ( 刺 ) 殺，也因此引發美國樂團The Rascals ( 之前大家熟知的團名為The Young Rascals) 的團員Felix Cavaliere和Eddie Brigati寫出此首《People Got to Be Free》。

由於歌曲含有政治性的背景，唱片公司一度擔憂，怕會影響到The Rascals的事業。經過此曲作者兼主唱Felix Cavaliere的爭取說服，唱片公司才終於同意發行。好在歌曲雖然採取高昂的曲調，但訴求的是寬容和自由，也並未抨擊到任何政治黨派團體及個人。此曲於1968推出後，在告示牌排行榜蟬聯了5週的冠軍，唱片銷售也超過了4百萬張。

即使大眾都接受這首歌，但The Rascals仍非常謹慎，為了防止發生意外情況，只在有多數非裔美人的觀眾時才現場演唱此曲。若否，則取消此曲目。
