今天在 MSN 上跟 GMAT 的好友 Eating 聊天
才發現她已經改英文名,
現在, 要叫她很 odd 很難唸的 ”Esther” (sounds like a chemical to me!)
”Eating” 這個名字, 只能被括弧框起來
就像是 ”中正紀念堂” 一樣, 將隨著人文的變遷, 新政權的修改而逐漸消失在我們這一代的歷史課本筆記中
Well, aparently 改名字也不是 ”Esther” 自願的
她所服務的公司, some mega corp selling financial instruments, 說叫 Eating
不夠 professional.
不夠 professional?
我不懂. 什麼名字是 professional? 什麼是 unprofessional?
住在北美這麼久的我, 怎摩沒聽過如此塗說?
難道是台灣人又自創一派, 找出新式命名法, 給英文名字做排行榜?
在選英文名字的時候, 我的見解是選一些特別一點但是不要太繞口的比較好
好聽但是如果太難唸, you’re only making it hard for people to remember:
”Oh HEY! You’re that girl whose name sounds like a chemical compound!”
Why do that? It just doesn’t make much sense to me.
只要名字不會被 made fun of, 不要有不好的 meaning, 我真的不知道為什麼要公司要給她取一個如此難唸的名字
Esther 聽起來很 professional, 難道 ”Eating” 就聽起來很 low class?
那如果我的中文名字呢? Wei-Min Chang, 夠 professional 嗎?
What a bullshit! 一個人的 professionalism 是從他/她的思考, 行為, 舉止, 談吐 和穿著來被 decide 的, 哪有什麼取一個 ”比較 professional” 的名字的道理?
This is a piece of crap, ”Eating” 很給人親切感, 又是一個很好的 ice breaker (hi, 我中文名字是怡停, I enjoy eating, 所以就很自然的叫自己 Eating)
多棒! 即使是帶有 Chinese name, 任何客戶聽到這個名字都會開心的笑吧
什麼鬼公司, 亂給 Eating 換名字, 真氣人
應該叫 Eating 去申訴, 去 fight for her own identity.
但是, 其實問題看到根本, 這是不是一般人所常犯的錯誤?
giving into society’s request, and forgetting about thy self?
”因為公司說如此這般, 所以我改了自己的名字”
”因為人家說講英文有口音很難聽, 所以我拼命練, 只想要 ’聽起來像美國人’”
”因為日本偶像很酷很前衛, 所以我講話的尾音都要加一個 ’Ne’, 可愛 Ne!”
”因為黑人很他媽的屌, 所以我 rap, rape, and become a nigga wanna be”
我的媽呀
why sacrifice your identity for the social norm?
Especially when you know for real you’ll never be like others?
Be yourself, know who you are, and show your true colour
Even if it is black, yellow or white.
And that’s speaking to myself, too.
有時候覺得之前自己太 white-washed, 導致自己失去自我的 identity
譬如, not talking much about my Chinese heritage, surpressing 東方和西方的
differences, always pro-white, 等等
就有如妳所說, 真正的 non-racism 是 acknowledging our differences,
不是 trying to be assimilated to another culture’s identity
之前的我, 的確有點白色主義
learning every bit of their culture, and ignoring my own
很差勁
Well, that’ll change this time around
去年回台三次的我
學到了提倡中華文化的重要
華人至上! 這個世紀是中國人的時代!
所以, call me WEI-MIN from now on!!
