此曲為披頭合唱團的貝士手Paul McCartney某日演唱完，在開車回家的路上忽得靈感而開始構思，後與John Lennon在1962/09共同合作完成。原歌名為《Seventeen》，歌詞開始的一句「She was just 17, she'd never been a beauty queen,」，但John認為改成「She was just 17, you know what I mean.」較佳，事後McCartney也說：這會讓人更有感覺，即使你並不懂我的意思。

1963，The Beatles在英國發行首張專輯《Please Please Me》，此首《I Saw Her Standing There》作為專輯的第一首曲目。年底，在美國發行單曲，但是作為另首《I Want Hold Your Hand》的B面，A面歌曲拿下了告示牌排行榜的冠軍，而此曲也在1964衝上了排行榜第14名。

McCartney原設想歌曲的場景是在英國某渡假營地舉辦的選美比賽，歌詞改了後感覺是眾人聚集的跳舞場合，一見鍾情後竟夜跳舞，是個happy ending。

美國女歌手Tiffany Darwish於1987翻唱此曲，時年僅15歲，獲得告示牌排行榜的第8名，是所有女歌手翻唱披頭歌曲而成績最佳的，當然，歌名也改成了《I Saw Him Standing There》。
