1958，美國靈魂及節奏藍調歌手Ben E. King加入doo-wop合唱團體The Five Crowns並擔任主唱，同年稍晚，The Drifters ( 漂流者 ) 的經理George Treadwell將原團員全部「請走」，置換Five Crowns的團員，成為了「新」The Drifters。

此首《There Goes My Baby》為Ben E. King與經理George Treadwell及另位Lover Patterson三人共同合寫並交由The Drifters來錄唱，歌曲的製作人為Jerry Leiber與Mike Stoller ( 倆人曾搭檔寫出一些知名的歌曲，如貓王Elvis的《Jailhouse Rock》，The Coaster的《Searchin’》《Yakety Yak》等 )。有趣的事情來了，兩位製作人採取的是非傳統的方法，使用高亢的弦樂和一些奇怪的鼓，及其它奇怪的聲音。Leiber 說，他第一次在收音機上聽到這首歌時，還以為正在收聽兩個電台。

這首歌混亂的錄音情況，使得Altantic唱片公司的合夥人兼執行製作Jerry Wexler大為不滿，除了痛譙兩位製作人，還認為是在浪費公司的錢。但歌曲發行後卻大大的成功，不僅在告示牌R&B排行榜奪得了冠軍，在熱門100排行榜也拿下了第2名

Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller異想天開的創新製作歌曲，成功或許有些運氣的成份，而在1961Ben E. King單飛後，三人合寫由King主唱的《Stand By Me》，成為了傳世的經典歌曲，足見這倆人在歌曲的寫作、製作上還是具有相當的實力。

 

歌曲的主題是女友離開不知去到何方，問題這是自己讓女友心碎和哭泣的結果，早知今日、何必當初？說來也是有點活該。呵呵！

美國樂團Jay & The Americans曾翻唱多首The Drifters的歌曲，其中台灣歌友較熟悉的應是1968的《This Magic Moment》。
