此曲為美國女歌手兼詞曲作家Gretchen Peters所寫，原先是要提供給女歌手Reba McEntire來唱，但被拒絕，之後再由鄉村女歌手Martina McBride來詮釋，收錄在她1994的專輯《The Way That I Am》中，單曲獲得熱門鄉村榜的第12名。此曲也在1995為寫歌的Peters奪得了CMA ( 鄉村音樂協會 ) 「年度最佳歌曲」的獎項。

由歌名「Independence Day ( 獨立日)」，或會誤以為這是首「愛國歌曲」，而其實這是首關於「家暴」的歌曲。故事是一個8歲小女孩的視角及所經歷的一些事情的感受。歌詞雖未明言，顯然是母親放火將房屋燒了，與家暴的父親同歸於盡，也藉由「獨立日」來隱喻是獲得了另種的「獨立自由」 ( 放火燒屋為觸法的不良示範，請勿效法。)。

Martina McBride曾任「全國家庭暴力熱線」及「全國終止家庭暴力網路」的發言人，自1995以來，她每年都主持田納西中部YMCA的名人拍賣會，迄2010，她已籌集了超過50萬美元。由她來詮釋此曲，也算得上是「名正言順」了。
