這首民謠歌曲最早是緣自於巴哈馬的搖籃曲，內容是講說一位即將在床上病逝的母親，安慰兒子的故事。此首歌曲也曾風行於50至60年代美國的社會反對運動中。

 

其實，這首歌曲中有眾多的字彙如「die」、「Load」、「river of Jordan」、「body」、「soul」、「brother」等，基本上都和宗教有關，故之後這首歌也被定位為「靈歌」，許多教堂的詩歌班也常演唱此曲。

 

這首歌曾被許多知名歌手翻唱，包含如Joan Baez、Peter,Paul and Mary、The Seekers，甚至還有披頭四的Paul McCarenty，而且每個版本的歌詞都略有不同，而當年我聽的是Ray Stevens的版本。

 

《All My Trials》被翻作「我的試煉」。許多人在遭逢重大困厄的時候，都會將之視為上蒼對自己的試煉，有如此的心情或才能沉得住氣，並勇於去面對。值此四川又發生大地震，看到那些家毀及痛失親人的災民，也實在幫不上什麼忙，謹以此歌，期盼他們的劫難soon be over。
