這是美國鄉村歌手Johnny Cash於1956年的首支鄉村排行榜冠軍曲 ( 熱門榜#12 )，目前在滾石雜誌歷來500首最佳歌曲排名第30。

1950年7月，Johnny Cash受徵召服役空軍，1951年在德州受訓時，認識了Vivian Liberto，約會三週之後被調往德國，駐外三年期間倆人往來了上百封的信件。1954年，Johnny Cash光榮退伍一個月後，就娶了Vivian Liberto為妻。這首《I Walk The Line》是Johnny Cash新婚不久後所作，一般咸認是他對妻子所表達的堅貞愛情，縱使隻身在外，也絕對會守分際。

由於Johnny Cash婚後經常在外巡迴演唱，並染有嚴重的酗酒及吸食禁藥的習慣，即便在家，個性也變得乖僻古怪，雖然生有4個女兒，終也導致於1966年離婚。其實，自60年代初期開始，Johnny Cash即常和 Carter Family ( 後期為由母親和女兒們共組的家庭合唱團體 ) 一起作秀表演，因而和June Carter熟識並產生情素，倆人曾於1967推出合唱曲《Jackson》，獲得了一座葛萊美獎。1968年，Johnny Cash和June Carter結婚 ( 此為June的第3段婚姻 )，自此在音樂及人生道路上相扶相持，倒也快樂幸福。2003，婚後35年，June Carter病逝 ( 73歲 )，沒想到四個月後，Johnny Cash也跟著因病辭世 ( 71歲 )。

2005年，福斯電影公司將Johnny Cash和June Carter的愛情故事拍成電影，片名《Walk The Line》( 中譯：為妳鍾情 )。而若瞭解此首歌曲的背景，或會感覺片名有些諷刺。但我深信，在愛情的當下，所有的言語和行為應該都是真心的。縱使之後背叛了愛情誓言，但若為的是追尋「真愛」，似也可獲得諒解了。
