MEETING AT NING 《夜會》
一
The grey sea and the long black land；大海灰暗，陸地黢黑綿恒；
And the yellow half—moon large and low；黃色的弦月又大又低懸；
And the startled little waves that leap 受驚的微浪從睡夢裡
In fiery ringlets from their sleep , 跳起，泛著閃亮的漣漪；
As I gain the cove with pushing prow , 我將猛沖的船頭抵上淺灣，
And quench its speed i’ the slushy sand .
在稀軟的沙泥中讓它停穩。
二
The a mile of warm sea—scented beach；隨後是一里海腥味的溫暖海濱；
Three fields to cross till a farm appears；穿過三塊田野，看見一農莊；
A tap at the pane , the quick sharp scratch 窗上一輕敲，快速利落的一劃，
And blue spurt of a lighted match , 點燃的火柴迸出藍色的火花；
And a voice less loud , thro’ its joys and fears , 一聲低問，透過歡樂和恐慌，
Than the two hearts beating each to each！不及兩顆緊貼的心狂跳的聲音！

注釋：
此詩與下面的《晨別》一詩原為一組，共題為《夜與晨》，作於 1845年。

PARTING AT MORNING 《晨別》

Round the cape of a sudden came the sea , 轉過岬角，突然大海迎面而來，
And the sun looked over the mountain’s rim；太陽從山梁之上探頭遠眺——
And straight was a path of gold for him , 它要走的是一條筆直的黃金道，
And the need of a word of men for me . 我需要的是一個男人的世界。

解析：
發言者顯然是個男人。他獨駕扁舟夤夜越海去與情人幽會。“猛沖的船頭”說明來勢之急，心情之急；詩人在此是否自覺地寓有性行為的雙關暗示，不得而知，但就如此題材如此暗示是英文詩中的傳統做法，讀者正不妨如此理解。“窗上一輕敲”，窗內人即刻點燈，說明其人早已有約，早已久等。寒喧問訊的聲音之低還不如兩人心跳的聲音大，是出於恐慌，怕驚動旁人，說明兩人關係是秘密的，不被社會認可的。詩人快速不停的描寫給我們透露了這些消息，可謂筒煉而生動。
