人工智慧（AI）技術未來可能將令子宮頸癌絕跡。因為今天發布的一份研究報告顯示，一套電腦演算法發現子宮頸癌癌前病變的準確度，遠高於受過訓練的專家或傳統篩檢。
法新社報導，根據世界衛生組織（WHO）統計，子宮頸癌名列全球婦女最常罹患癌症排行榜的第4位，去年全球估計共有57萬新病例。
儘管子宮頸癌的篩檢和疫苗已有重大進展，能成功預防大多數子宮頸癌成因人類乳突病毒的擴散。但這些進展主要仍只有生活在富裕國家的女性受惠。
世界衛生組織的數據顯示，2012年全球約有26萬6000名女性死於子宮頸癌，其中90%生活在中低收入國家。
美國國家癌症研究所（National Cancer Institute）癌症流行病學和遺傳學部門（Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics）醫生暨資深作家許夫曼（Mark Schiffman）表示：「子宮頸癌現在是伴隨貧窮和資源匱乏的疾病。」他研究如何治療子宮頸癌已有35年歷史。
許夫曼說：「我們正嘗試找到極便宜、極簡單但非常準確的方法，既能透過接種疫苗，也能在稍晚時機透過手機或類似裝置安裝的簡易技術，來打擊子宮頸癌。」
許夫曼所屬的團隊，利用從哥斯大黎加收集的6萬餘份篩檢影像檔案，建立一套演算法。這份研究從1990年代開始進行，參與的女性超過9400名，追蹤歷史最長達18年。
他們發布在「國家癌症研究所期刊」（Journal of the National Cancer Institute）的報告指出，這套稱為「自動化視覺評估」（automated visual evaluation）的人工智慧技術，發現癌前細胞的準確率達到91%。反觀人類專家檢查出的機率僅69%，傳統抹片檢查準確率也僅71%。
此外，在子宮頸癌高危險群的25至49歲女性當中，人工智慧演算法發現癌前細胞的準確率更高達97.7%。
這項計畫的目標，是在3至5年內推廣這項技術，讓全球更多臨床試驗病患參與，最終讓技術在世界各地更容易取得。
