此首《Pretend》由Dan Belloc等4人於1952所合寫，為一首流行曲，不僅翻唱者眾，亦有樂器演奏者。而其中最知名的版本，當為美國黑人爵士鋼琴手兼歌唱家Nat King Cole，其版本在1953奪得告示牌最佳銷售排行榜第3名及英國單曲排行榜的第2名。

Nat King Cole於15歲時即決定放棄學業、開始追尋其音樂事業。曾經錄唱過的歌曲，有超過百首成為排行榜的流行曲。其所成立的三人樂隊，也成為後來小型爵士樂隊仿傚的形態。他也是首位擔任電視系列節目的黑人主持人。

1964/09，Nat King Cole的身體出現了異狀，體重驟降並感到背痛，而在此同時期卻與一位19歲的舞者Gunilla Hutton有了婚外情，因而使得第二任妻子Maria Hawkins Ellington考慮要和他離婚。1964/12，Cole入院檢查證實得了肺癌 ( Cole香煙抽的很兇 )，接著進行手術。1965的新年，Cole還短暫返家去看「粉絲」寄給他的成百上千的慰問卡片和信件。再回醫院後，Cole寄了5000美元 ( 相當於現今約為40000美元 ) 給小情人Gunilla Hutton，此之後Gunilla打電話給正宮Maria，懇求她和Cole離婚。Maria也因而正式面對丈夫關於彼此間的感情問題，最後終於讓Cole中斷了這段不倫關係而與妻子和好。1965/02/14--情人節，Cole和妻子暫時地離開醫院驅車至海邊 (  散心賞景？重溫羅曼蒂克的情調？)，次日清晨，Cole在醫院中過世，享年45歲。

以下所貼的翻唱版本，Brenda Lee算是中規中矩。而Emy Jackson顯然是有受到出身荷屬東印度群島的荷蘭樂團Tielman Brother版本的影響，成為快節奏的搖滾版，雖讓人耳目一新，但感覺只是饒富趣味而已。
