Entering college is a new start for students. Someone says that “There are three major credits in college: schoolwork, clubs, and love.” However, there are some students only pay attention to clubs and love, and they overlook schoolwork. In the end, school may discontinue these students’ schooling. That is a very serious event. So, how to be a successful student in college seems to be very important. The following are some viewpoints of mine about what makes a successful college student.
In my mind, the first trait for a successful college student is using good communication skills. In college, there will be many reports. Professors often ask students to do reports by team-working. In the past, we did our reports by individual. But, now, team-working is the most popular way to do reports. So, team-working means you have to work with other people. In other words, you must have good communication skills, or you may not do reports well with your teammates.
I think the second trait is having good time management skills. In high school, teachers always gave you a schedule for studying, and they pushed you to study. But, after entering college, professors won’t ask you to study. You have to plan your own schedule. If you don’t use your time well, then you may find out that you don’t have enough time to do things. It may cause big problem. If you don’t have enough time on studying, you may fail on some subjects. If you fail on too many subjects, school will kick you out of school. That is horrible.
In my view, the last but not least, the third trait is know when and how to seek help. The biggest difference between high school teacher and college professors is that professors may not ask what your
problem is actively, but teachers in high schools did that. So, in college, you have to be more active toward your study. You have to find problems and their solutions. It is very important not to be shy to ask
questions. While entering college, you have to study for yourself and by yourself. Remember, “Do it yourself.”
In brief, I think being a successful student is not an easy task. You have to learn a lot of new things; it seems a lot of challenges are waiting for you. If you are an active learner, everything will go smoothly for you. All in all, being “active” is the most important principle for being a successful college student.
