王靖宇《金聖嘆的生平及其文學批評》的一些雙語和翻譯 商榷

書目：王靖宇（John C. Y. Wang）《金聖嘆的生平及其文學批評》 (Chin Sheng-t’an: His Life and Literary Criticism) （修訂本中英文雙語版 談蓓芳譯 上海古籍出版社，2004）

這本書的內容、制作和翻譯，都是當今中國一流水準，值得喝采、敬禮。
不過，我提出一些或許可商榷處，供大家討論。以下段為例：

3. The grey line of a grass snake (,…). What Chin means by this technique seems to corresponded partially to a fashionable phrase in modern criticism—the “recurrent image.” That is to say, through the repeatitive but unobtrusive use of a key image or symbol the author succeeds in achieving a unity or a certain purpose in his work similar in that achieved in a symphony through the recurrence of a motif. The most notable example is the author’s effective use of the ‘club’ image throughout the Ching-yang Ridge scene, where Wu Sung subdues a huge tiger singlehandedly (chapter 22). The whole episode, together with Chin’s running comments, is translated in section V below. (p.284)

3.草蛇灰線法。金聖嘆此法所指，似乎與現代批評中所流行的詞語「複調意象（recurrent image）」部分相似。即作者通過在其作品中反複而又不露痕跡地使用某一關鍵意象或象徵，成功地達到某種協和效果，猶如交響樂中由某一基調的重複出現所達到的協和效果一樣。最突出的例子是在武松景陽崗獨立制服巨虎（第22回）的整個場景中，作者對於「哨棒」這一意象的有效使用。整段文字連同金聖嘆的一連串評點，將在下文……（頁65）

我給的建議：原文的running comments，應該考慮改用英文慣用語 running commentary。 【按：running commentary noun [C] (a) continuous description of events as they are happening或a description of an event, usually a sports event, given at the same time as it happens】
本書將它翻譯成「一連串評點」，或可考慮為「一套評點與發揮」。

「複調意象（recurrent image）」的翻譯，似乎有點問題，因為「主題」（motif）（談蓓芳翻譯為「基調」）的反複出現，可能與「複調」無關。
又，此處「部分相似」（corresponded partially），在附錄I 的論文中（Appendix I），卻變成READILY TRANLATABLE。

這recurrent image術語和’COMIC RELIEF”【p.382/p.147 喜劇性穿插】等，在索引中都找不到。

又，第147頁中，對於濟慈John Keats於1817年所用的著名用語Negative Capability，竟然翻譯成「否定能力」而又無注釋，不妥【大陸關於Keats的詩選和書信選集，對此辭都有解釋說明】。【上文登出後，同天我再讀該書第二章pp.38-9，發現對原意有解釋（無附英文）；英文有此詞條索引而中文缺。此書索引還不精確，如用西方術語談方法都無相互指引。】
