nihilism(虛無主義)


1. An extreme form of skepticism that denies all existence.
2. A doctrine holding that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated.



高達的成名作「斷了氣」Breathless乃是 French New Wave Movement 中的最有代表性作品. 法國新浪潮的特點, 是一批由critics出身的導演, 製作簡單, low budget, 重用年輕未成名演員, 話題不牽涉重大社會事情, 而且十分具幽默感, 倩節欠明確因果關係. French New Wave是post-war 六十年代的活動, 以我個人極有限的看電影經驗, 斗膽總結一句French New Wave 充塞戰後nihilistic element. 這批如高達, 杜魯福, 伊力盧馬(Eric Rohmer), 還有積葵丹美(Jacques Demy)等, 相信都在 Second World War中經學生時代, 戰爭的殘酷和illogic使他們對現世一切價值, custom等抱懷疑甚或拒絕的態度, 形成這批特別著重個人風格, 一反從前電影格局, 甚或情節欠缺因果甚至不合理的 French New Wave Cinema.

「斷了氣」在整個Movement有其啟航性的作用. 「斷了氣」故事十分簡單, 男主角Michel因超速被交通警追捕, 在車廂中發現了朋友的手槍, 便用此射殺了警察. 然後到巴黎跟Patricia戀上, 其間在巴黎不斷偷錢和偷車, 頻密程度比一日三餐還多; 最後Michel被警察追捕, Patricia如經典femme fatale般出賣了他, 通風報迅, Michel不理會接他逃走的朋友, 留在街上被警察射死.

整部電影基本上對情節沒有交代任何原因. Michel為何要將交通警殺死, Michel與Patricia如何認識, 為何巴黎的司機總把車匙留在車廂, Michel最後為何不逃走等等, 全片隻字沒有交代. 基本上Michel是一個不能以一字形容的主角, 因他做事談不上有什麼原因可言. 這個跟卡夫卡(Kafka)的審判(The Trial)有點兒相似, 主角由此至終不知道自己為何受到審判. 無獨有偶地, 卡夫卡亦生於戰亂時代. 像斷了氣和審判這種刻意不理會前因後果或正常道理的做法, 明顯有對現世不信任的意識, 其中以卡夫卡筆下人無理由地受了審判, 在我眼中更可算向戰爭以至宗教開了一個很大的玩笑. 二者都極有nihilism的色彩, all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated.

整部「斷了氣」就是不合常理的. Patricia出賣Michel為的就是要證實自己愛還是不愛他......

最後是一些在「斷了氣」中的quotation, 不乏精采而又nihilistic的佳句:

"Why do you want to make love to me?" asks Patricia in the bedroom scene. "Because you’re beautiful" "but I’m not beautiful" "OK, then because you’re ugly"

" What would u choose between grief and nothingness?" asked Patricia " Grief is a compromise, I would rather choose nth." replied Michel.

" The ambition of life is to first be immortal, and then to die."

"I don't know if I'm unhappy because I'm not free, or if I'm not free because I'm not happy."

"U should never touch the brake because the car would stop."
