臺灣的第一種『文字』——羅馬拼音文字（或稱拉丁字）
一六二七年，傳教士甘迪第斯（Geagius Candidus），開始在Sincan（新港社，約在今臺南善化。）接著Soelaugh（蕭壟社，臺南佳里）、Backloan（目加溜灣社，臺南新市）、Ｍattauw（麻豆社，臺南麻豆）、及Tavocan（大目降社，臺南大內）傳教，接著、、、，臺灣原住民先後接受荷蘭傳教士的教化。
荷蘭傳教士用『羅馬字』，拼成的臺灣人語言，編寫聖經和教材，使得臺南原住民（這裡所指的原住民，並非單指現在所謂的「原住民」，而是指全部臺灣原住人民，包含平埔族與高山族，精確一點是指「西拉雅族人」，也就是中國惡毒學者所謂的土著、番。）學習基督教教義和書寫、閱讀能力使之提高，地名、社名皆用「羅馬字」予以「音譯」而成，使原住民的知識提高了不少，經過了三十年的努力，被荷蘭傳教士教育過的臺灣原住人民，在南部達到八成之多。
到了一六三七年，平埔族人受洗人數達五千四百多人，有一千多對夫妻以基督教儀式舉行婚禮。
荷蘭傳教士用羅馬拼音字，寫成西拉雅族（平埔族）語言的《聖經》、《祈禱文》、《十誡》、、、等。教育平埔族人，光以新港社而言，到了一六五九年時，其住民已有百分之八十三信仰基督教，而這種「羅馬拼音字」的『西拉雅語文』在新港社，也最為流行，所以就被稱之為「新港文書」，這是臺灣原住民族在歷史上，首次出現的「我手寫我口」的文字。

so-called indigenous Chinese vicious scholar, Fan.) learn Christian doctrine
and writing, so that improve reading ability, place names, social names are
used to be "the Roman word" "transliteration" is made, so
that the knowledge of indigenous peoples to improve a lot, after three years of
efforts, Taiwan's indigenous peoples by the Dutch missionary education before,
in the southern reaches as much as eighty percent.
To 1637, the number of baptized people Pingpu five thousand four hundred
people, there are more than one thousand pairs of husband and wife in Christian
wedding ceremony.
