I would say, this film is very Dutch, as it reflects the Dutch society, how acceptant the Dutch society can be and the frankness of the Amsterdamer. The story started as Camiel, a homosexual, is nearly crashed by the car which is owned by his long lost friend, Simon. Camiel started his friendship with Simon years ago when he was really crashed by Simon’s car, but they didn’t meet each other since Camiel slept with Simon’s ex-girlfriend, Sharon. Now, an accident put Camiel and Simon together, but one thing was unexpected- Simon got cancer.
There’re scenes about the past where Camiel and Simon were still good friends and those at present where Camiel and Simon start their new friendship again when Simon’s getting sicker and sicker. In the film, each role’s character is very clear. We can see Simon’s always the centre in group of friends as he is always a brave, energetic, happy and popular guy. Though what he says is sometimes a bit rude and likes to joke around, no one would hate him because he just has a frank character. It’s quite unbearable to see such a positive person, Simon, becomes sicker day by day. Still, Simon, as usual, the one who spreads the happiness around even when he’s lying on bed and going to die.
Throughout the film, we can something forbidden in most countries but accepted in Netherlands, sex, nudity, marijuana, homosexuality and euthanasia. Dutch people choose these, accept all these and bear the consequences. They bear the consequences of sleeping around or taking drugs without complain. They are homosexual, they don’t care if people joke about them and get married with their partners. And they allow euthanasia. All are something they choose to have and everything is exposed in the film as real and true as flesh and blood.
I’ve never imagined how euthanasia would be like and this film gives us a real true picture about it. It can be like a ceremony, e.g. marriage that preparation is needed and family and friends will be there to witness. “Simon” is a film realistic, funny but touching with a wonderful script and directing by Eddy Terstall.
