[ people ] Glafcos Clerides 1919.4.24 ~ 2013.11.15

在 Deutsche Welle 的 "Inside Europe" 聽到這一則新聞，因為塞浦路斯總統Nicos Anastasiades 說的這段話，我覺得應該要把它記下來："Clerides is the politician sought by history, not one of those who persistently sought a place in history." 很明顯的，我們的馬總統就是後者。

據 DW 的報導，Glafcos Clerides 的去世，是自 1977 年馬卡里奧斯三世大主教 (Archbishop Makarios, 同時也是賽國第一任總統) 去世後，令該國人民投注最多情感哀悼其逝世的政治人物。


Bidding farewell to a beloved president

Cyprus’s former President Glafcos Clerides was laid to rest this past week. Hundreds of Cypriots paid respect to the man whose statesmanship was the driving force behind the divided country’s successful European Union membership bid. The service was the culmination of a three-day mourning period for Clerides, who held the post of president from 1993 to 2003. Nathan Morley was at the service.
