[樂評] HEROES ON EARTH

HEROES ON EARTH

WHEN two extremes come clashing together, you either get a jarring mess, or absurd harmony.

In Lee Hom’s latest album, there is both.

It would be so easy to call him a madman for blending Chinese opera with western rap and hip-hop, but you have to commend him for trying.

The result of opera cling-clang-meets-street rap is disquieting at first, but some tracks, like his first single, Hua Tian Cuo, and the Ashin-penned Zai Mei Bian will slowly grow on you.

It is just that Lee Hom tends to get carried away with the whole ’chinked-out’ idea he coined to refer to his brand of Chinese-centric hip-hop.

His ego has inflated to dangerous proportions, and he boasts about summoning so many Heroes On Earth and showing the world what Chinese musicians can do.

Clearly he does not realise that sometimes, less is more.

But one has to give him credit for roping in so many notable talents to appear on his album.

Veteran opera singer Li Yan (Farewell To My Concubine) lends his vocals in the title track, though the effect is not as stunning as Bobby Chen’s One Night In Beijing.

K-pop hottie Rain croons in Perfect Collaboration, jointly composed by Lee Hom and Rain’s album producer, Hitman Bang.

It is interesting but far from perfect, especially when Lee Hom sounds overtly enthusiastic next to Rain’s cool grooves.

What Lee Hom does best are still his slower numbers, and these are the classic tunes that people will remember in years to come.

Kiss Goodbye is a bittersweet breakup song that will comfort many lonesome hearts, and there is also a tender love declaration in First Morning.

My personal favourite is Big City Small Love.

This simple but catchy tune is vaguely reminiscent of David Tao’s Small Town Girl, but Lee Hom’s rendition is a lot sweeter.
