Here’s what’s making headlines in Asia today

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the release on bail of a senior
opposition leader who was sentenced to 23 years in prison four years ago for criticizing the army.

Beijing and Washington have agreed to cooperate more closely on product and food safety as officials wrap up a visit that coincided with the recall of nearly 1 million Chinese-produced toys tainted with lead paint.

Officials are searching for a neutral meeting place in Afghanistan where South Korean negotiators and Taliban captors can safely meet for face-to-face talks on releasing 21 Korean hostages, while Korea wants the United States’ aid in freeing the hostages.

Heavy monsoon rains and floods have killed at least 166 people and displaced another 19 million across Bangladesh and much of northern India.

Amid all the talk of unity and harmony at the ASEAN Regional Forum, Asia’s largest security grouping, conflict still brewed behind closed doors and even boiled over publicly, with normally diplomatic Japan bristling over a confrontation with North Korea.
Japan sought to include in a final joint statement a reference to the North’s past abduction of Japanese citizens. For its part, North Korea demands that the U.S. end its ’hostile policy’ as six-party talks enter a crucial phase.

Two brothers have been indicted on terrorism-related charges in San Francisco after one allegedly provided money and equipment to the other who was battling troops in the Philippines as a member of a terrorist group.

Support for the Cabinet of Japan’s embattled Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has dropped to its lowest point yet, according to an opinion poll, amid calls for his resignation following an embarrassing defeat in upper house elections.

North Korea denounces a planned joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States, calling it an unacceptable provocation and preparation for an invasion of the communist nation.

Roman Catholic bishops in the Philippines are asking the faithful to pray for rain to break a three-month dry spell that has reduced water supplies and caused sporadic electricity blackouts.

In the U.S., An engineer has pled guilty to stealing military training software and trying to sell it to the Chinese Navy, becoming only the third person to be convicted on the rare charge of economic espionage.

The first-ever U.N. General Assembly meeting on climate change needed an extra day so speakers from worried nations could discuss global warming’s impact and the need for international action.
