A 15-month-old child is struggling for life, confirmed to be the first case of the more severe type 71 enterovirus.
Health officials today say the child remains in a pediatric intensive care unit in Xinzhu, after being admitted to the hospital in the middle of last month.
An official with the Center for Disease Control said, when the child was admitted, he had a high fever and vomiting, typical symptoms of many types of enterovirus.
However, his condition quickly worsened, as he developed an accelerated heart beat and spasms, then dysfunction of the heart and lungs, and eventually fell into a coma, from which he has yet to awaken.
None of the family members of the infant, including the grandparents, parents and siblings, who all live together, have been found to be infected with the deadly strain of the disease.
Enterovirus type 71 is the most deadly strain ... an outbreak of which hit Taiwan in 1998 ... sickening 405 children, 78 of whom later died.
A similar outbreak in 2005 infected 145 children and killed 15.
