二二八事件在臺中：二七部隊（又名：學生軍）
一九四七年三月，臺灣中部由黃金島（本名：黃圳島），在二二八事件發生後，在中部組織「臺灣獨立治安隊」及「自衛隊」。
所謂「二七部隊」（事實上稱為：「學生軍」較為符合事實。）是由有正義感的臺灣臺中青年與臺中的各中等學校的學生，為治安而組成的「臺灣獨立治安隊」、「警察隊」、「自衛隊」、「臺中師範隊」、「臺中商專隊」、「臺中一中隊」，後來為了方便調度、指揮，就以二月二十七日黎明，而合成「二七部隊」，由黃金島指揮。
臺中市議會、地方士紳及「二二八事件處理委員會」、及前述二七部隊組織，開會討論；由日治時代的日本總督府「府評議委員」、日本戰敗後，率「致敬團」到中國南京，向蔣介石致敬的林獻堂主持會議，結果呢？可想而知！——「主張歡迎廿一師進入臺中。」
然而「二七部隊」主張，應對抗殘暴的中國第廿一師，並在十六日誘導廿一師到埔里，以自我犧牲的方式，來保護臺中市民的身家安全。
三月十六日早上，黃金島指揮「二七部隊」學生軍守住烏牛欄吊橋的北方，等待廿一師的軍隊到來，過了不久，果然廿一師四三六團第二營於上午九時抵達「牛相觸」附近，其第六連企圖過橋攻擊「二七部隊」的烏牛欄橋守軍，結果被二七部隊的守軍迎頭痛擊；廿一師草屯指揮部再派遣第四連及第七連趕赴烏牛欄橋馳援。
三月十七日，廿一師第二營，從拂曉就不斷的對二七部隊發動攻擊，二七部隊雖是學生軍，所謂初生之犢不畏虎，也不甘示弱，予以還擊，此時臺灣的高山族援軍到來，加入二七部隊，對中國廿一師第二營，予以痛擊，廿一師第二營見勢不妙，立即撤退。
此次戰役，事後廿一師第四三六團公布該次「埔里戰役」所投入的兵力和傷亡數字如下：
投入戰役軍官共一百四十八名：死亡一名，傷一名。
投入戰役士兵共二千三百三十二人，死亡十人，傷八名。
抗暴學生軍有四名陣亡，是為臺灣抗暴英雄烈士，應該入祀『臺灣忠烈祠』。
此次「烏牛欄橋戰役」，是二二八事件中，最慘烈的戰役，學生軍以智取勝、以寡擊眾，應為臺灣人民之表率。
