『二二八事件』，據作者家鄉父老言最少十萬人以上遇害、或失蹤。包含三月二十一日起，至「清鄉屠殺」五月十五日止。
因此，二二八事件的死亡人數，必須是從一九四七年二月二十七日夜，陳文溪被誤殺開始計算，至同年的五月十五日止，舉凡公開殺害、秘密殺害、或無故失蹤者、或被重傷害後抬回家後未幾即告身亡者、、、皆算數。
二二八事件死傷的人數，我先從中華民國政府的官方報告說起，他們蓄意的常引用貪生怕死的楊亮功與早期官方的報告，謊稱二二八事件中，軍警死傷比人民嚴重，『惡意扭曲事實真相』，之後，這一連串的謊言都被一一戳破。
之後依據「臺灣旅滬六團體，關於臺灣事件報告書」的估計：
「自三月八日至十六日，臺灣同胞被屠殺人數初步估計以高雄最多，約三千人，基隆、臺北市次之，各約兩千餘人，嘉義一千餘人，淡水一千人，新竹、桃園、臺中、臺南、苗栗，其他各地一、二百人不等，總數在一萬人以上，連重、輕傷者計之，至少三萬人以上。」
依據紐約時報記者霍伯曼三月二十二日南京專電：
「據估計三月十四日止，有二千二百名臺灣人在街上被槍殺或處決。」
該報特派員電訊則說：
「從臺灣回到中國的外國人們，則估計被殺的臺灣人達一萬人。」
日本朝日新聞調查研究室報告表示：
「臺灣人的死者或行蹤不明者的正確數字不詳，但估計有一萬到數萬人。」
楊逸民在《二二八民變》一書中指出：
一九六○年行政院下令把臺灣人民戶籍中「有籍無人」的戶籍消掉，人數高達十二萬五千八百多人。
