yesterday, i've watched "wings of desire" (柏林穹蒼下), a film of Wim Wenders in 1987, basing on the story, which was co-written by peter handke, richard reitinger & wim wenders, was then made into the english film "city of angels" (天使多情) but "wings of desire" is deeper in meaning when city of angels remains mainly focusing on the love b/w the fallen angel & the woman.
as the film was set in 1987's berlin, it was b4 the downfall of communist soviet union & b4 the collapse of berlin wall. the angels witness the WWII, the nazist era & the communist influence in germany, particularly in berlin. this film is very "berlin" as u can observe sth abt berlin from moment to moment, they talk abt "charlottenburg", "potsdamer platz" & the snack booth with "curry wurst", all makes me miss the days in berlin.
the angels hear human's heart everyday, observe what they do, they try to feel their heart & life, comfort every soul in need. they see the beauty in this world, especially, damiel, but cassiel tends to see the dark side of this world which paves the way for the next episode "faraway, so close" (咫尺天涯) in 1993. but obviously all they can feel is not real enough as the black & white colour shows the tastelessness of being an angel & from time to time they show they're longing for being human to get the real feeling & touch.
at last, damiel gives up his eternal wings & becomes human to feel, to taste, to appreciate the happiness of being, in real, & to love, a woman. his world becomes all colourful ever after.
this film is very poetic, with beautiful photography, nice picture of scenery and excellent ambience. but i do admit that this film needs lots of patience to see, perhaps coz i dunno german that lessens my concentration on the monologues & also last night i was a bit tired.
there's one thing funny, i started to remember i'd indeed watched "faraway, so close" some yrs ago while watching "wings of desire" as i recognised the character, cassiel. in "faraway, so close", he lost the identity of angel for helping the people in need for real, but he has to bear the consequences as the reality is not as perfect as he's thought b4. the film shows the real situation of being, there's goodness but at the same time badness, there's also the bad angel/devil played by willem dafoe, an american actor. but i've forgotten most of the details of the film.
i'm not sure if wim wenders tries to show the desire of the eastern german & berliners as the role of angels, a desire to be human, a metaphor as desire & fantasy to be reunited with the west b4 1989 in "wings of desire" & the real situation of reuniting with the west after 1989 showed in the film "faraway, so close" that everything isnt as wonderful as they've imagined.
what a surprise that nick cave really appeared in the film, as he's spent some yrs in berlin that some of his dark music reflects his feeling towards this city.
