It’s a story about a couple, Matt & Lisa. Matt is a Brit who works as something like a geologist, Lisa is a young wild American gal, and we don’t know why she came to England and what she did. They met in the concert of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and started their sexual relationship with the background music “whatever happened to my rock & roll”, as wild & hot as rock, the music & sex matched very well.
Then we see how their feelings towards each other grew with the clips of Von Bondies's “cmon cmon”, Elbow's “fallen angel” & Primal Scream's “movin' on up”. But their relationship started to go downwards when they no longer shared time together on bed, instead, Lisa went to strip club for further excitement & masturbated herself. It implies everything when she wasn’t willing to share the sweet moment on bed with that guy anymore.
As time went by, their relationship's started to go better & a bit more stable. At least, Lisa brought a lovely pantie as present for matt, they both had fun on bed again. When the piano solo “debbie” of Michael Nyman came, we could feel the harmony between them, we knew they finally stroke a balance between their sex & love life.
But the sweet moment didn’t last long, after one year relationship, Lisa had to leave & she finally invited Matt to her own place means she finally admitted Matt did occupy some space in her heart. The last scene was Matt went to concert alone, 500 people were with him but he could still feel lonely. the song “love burns” of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was played as end credit, singing "now she's gone... love burns inside me", repeating the lyric again & again, it tells everything about Matt's heart at that moment.
Some people criticize this film neither has a clear story line nor description of characters, only sex, sex, sex. But when we observe, we can see some clues. As it was discussed about how those audio clips matched every sex scene & the ups & downs in their relationship. Besides, we can indeed see characteristics of these two lovers. Lisa is surely a wild energetic young gal, we’ve seen how she danced, how she wanted to go further in sex. & matt is just an opposite, a dull guy, not really young, got a stable professional "boring" job, maybe. When u see their conversations like, Lisa said "your glasses look stupid" & Matt replied "I’m trying to look stupid", Lisa continued "your glasses look ugly", Matt simply responded "I’m trying to look ugly". From this simple dialogue, we can see Matt is truly a boring guy who doesn’t know how to express himself well.
Their communication wasn’t enough, their relationship build on sex, but they were attracted to each other perhaps because of music, sex & drugs. Perhaps, they just didn’t know how to express their love so they expressed through a primitive non-verbal way: sex. There’s a monologue coming from Matt’s mouth "claustrophobia & agoraphobia in the same place, like two people in a bed", somehow, Matt felt insecure inside about this relationship & towards her erratic girlfriend. He used to talk about North Pole & ice reflects his view towards Lisa- unpredictable & easily changes. I believe Lisa loved him too as she said she wanted to bite him, bite him hard that would hurt, Girl would bite a guy when she loves him too much that she feels she hates him too.
This film isn’t simply an erotic film telling nothing but a film reflects the reality, ups & downs of a relationship. It doesn’t only expose nude physically but mentally as well. It concerns everyone's life, sex & drugs, something would give u pleasure but u dare not say it in public freely, something you enjoy but you feel ill at ease to see them revealed. Sex is not something evil, its nature is beauty, try to see it from another side.
9 audio clips & music in the film were finely selected, suiting their relationship & feelings, all made u excited & want to dance. The piano solo of Michael Nyman was amazingly beautiful, that move my heart more than any other rock concert’s clip. Though I as a rock music supporter feel regretful to say so, it's true. Perhaps, Michael Winterbottom just tries to tell you, love should contain harmony like a romantic balled of Michael Nyman rather than just passionate sex like rock & roll. 9 songs is a film with 69 minutes too good.
