lately, i'm interested in films not telling the positivity of the world, but the dark side in this world, exposing the nasty sides (or true sides) of human nature, cos, it's the truth that world isn't perfect, there's always no happy-ending, "closer" is one of those.
all four actors in this film played the flawed characters. first, natalie portman, alice, a young attractive american girl from new york, an ex-stripper, works as waitress after one year in london, comes to london for ending a love affair, it seems she's been hurt, too much wounded, her past is quite a mystery, she met dan bcos dan sent her to hospital after she was crashed by a car, then they became love & lived together. second, dan, played by jude law, a handsome english journalist, writing obituaries, gentle glasses-worn man, but acted like a don juan after a year with alice, smoked again, wrote a book abt his love & sex life with alice. third, julia roberts, anna, an american photographer, looks calm & sophisticated, she fell for dan when he flirted with her on the day when anna was taking photos for dan for his book's promotion, they kissed, then, dan brought alice to see anna. anna took photos for alice, one of the photos with a crying face, dan & anna were seeing each other after a year since they first met. forth, clive owen, plays larry, an english doctor, a very masculin character, was linked with the 3 characters bcos he was fooled & turned on by dan who pretended a gal called anna in a sex chat room (it was a really amusing scene), cheated him to the aquarium to meet anna, the ironic thing was after larry & anna's met in aquarium, they then turned out to be lover & got married after 2 year. things went on nearly all unexpected.
alice & dan were in love in first sight, after a year living together, dan met anna, they loved each other in first sight as well, but anna said she wasnt a thief, she didnt let dan see her even he asked her 2. anna met larry, next, they became lovers. after a year, dan met anna again for anna's exhibition of photography. dan was there wasnt for the photos, but for seeing anna, dan didnt even take a look at the photo of alice of crying, but kept staring at anna & tried to talk to her even she already got larry as her bf. on the other hand, larry noticed alice, such an attractive flirty gal. they both knew what was going on b/w dan & anna, anyway, they kept talking. alice said abt the photos, a photographer takes photos for all thosr strangers, the photos cant reflect the real side of the models, just the beautiful sides of the models that ppl expected to see & thought they were. art (of photography or any other thing) isnt supposed for reflecting the beautiful sides of sth/sb. in your mind, but the real sides of sth/sb.
after that exhibition, dan & anna were together, but the director didnt let u know until after a year. dan confessed to alice that he'd been with anna for already one whole year. alice was sad, cos she was cheated the whole yr without knowing the truth. dan confessed nearly everything, alice was crying, but she chose to leave at once. i dropped a few tears during this scene.
after that exhibition, anna & dan were together, but anna got married with larry. she got a long face when larry was back home, she admitted she'd been with dan during 1 yr only when larry asked her. she refused to tell him all the truth until larry pushed her. larry wanted to know all abt the sex b/w anna & dan, anyway he looked sad at last b4 he left. i felt sorry for him.
so, we see the differences b/w male & female in dealing with love affair sometimes. dan chose to be honest to alice, cos he thought he loved her, he didnt wanna let alice go though he was with anna at the same time. anna was dishonest & lied to larry, she was cold to larry & let him go. i do admit that female is sometimes a good liar, from tiny thing to big deal, maybe u would say "well, i dont think so, my gf or ex-gfs never lied to me", i would say "u're wrong, they might hv lied to u, but u never know even on the day u die" (anyway, of cos it's not 100% on every case).
after all, alice & larry were sad & left behind, dan & anne could be together, but anna didnt look happy at all. cos, later, director then let us know what has happened b4. anne asked dan to sign the document of divorce, but larry got a condition- hv their one last sex.
next, dan went to larry's place to beg him leaving anna alone cos he knew anna's heart was back to larry. honestly, i really enjoyed the scene with these 2 male characters, cos, it was tensed, playful, a fight psychological, but obviously, dan was in a much much weaker position. he came with all wet & a sad face. it was unexpected that larry could be such a witty tactical guy. what's more, he had sex with alice & told dan abt that. dan was crying & didnt know what to do, larry told him- go to find alice.
the scene was back to the moment when larry was sad & he went to a club & saw alice. alice had a striptease for larry & they had some talk. but alice didnt really talk truly to him except she confided her real name is jane jones.
dan finally found alice in the club, they went to hotel, everything seemed fine, until dan pushed alice to tell him the truth abt if she had sex with larry, aliced was unwilling to tell. dan wanted to go out for awhile for cigeratte & waited for alice telling the truth, but he then went back, without going down stair. he re-entered the room to woo alice, but alice said she didnt love dan anymore from that time on. dan begged her back, but she said she didnt feel love. it ended up with dan slapping alice on face.
at last, we saw larry was lying on bed with anna, like a couple they used to be. but anna didnt look happy nor sad. anna was indeed a very selfish woman, i believe that she loved both larry & dan, she wanted to hv both, she wasnt happy when she lost one of them. she actually didnt know what she wanted, she became a bad person but felt guilty. she was passive & couldnt resist, she would be dominated by anyone stronger. so, she was with dan, & then was back to larry. b4, i've not thought, larry would win over dan in this case.
alice was back to america, her passport showed that her real name was jane jones & dan was left alone, he found out alice was just a name on a tomb. he was fooled at the beginning. a don juan-liked dan got alice as he wished, got anna as he wanted, but at last, was dumped like a fool, a total loser. the unexpectation of abt the story & characters is the interesting point for this film.
alice/jane, indeed, dominates her life very well, she goes as she wants, comes as she likes, from new york to london, from london to america, from stranger to be with dan, from dan to stranger, stranger to be with larry, larry to dan, to be with dan to stranger again, & she made dan smoke again but indeed she could quit smoking if she wanted after leaving dan. it's a reflection of modern time's female, can get control of her life & accept thing comes & goes with no regrets. so i really like it.
sometimes, life is like this, we thought we gained, but at last, we lost, we know not until the last moment. love can create posivility, but also anger & jealousy. we would tell the truth or lie bcos of love, but tell the truth or lie for protecting ourselves. we hurt the one we love & destroy ourselves due to love.
life is full of contradiction. so, what's love? if ppl can just leave their lovers for sb. else & leave sb. else to be back to their original lovers, i think, u would love someone if u believe u love him/her. or life is too plain sometimes, u need sth special happened to make your life less ordinary, so, u would take risk. a straight line isnt attractive but a circle or a curl line.
the music in "closer" isnt very brilliant, but enuf to catch my ears. start with damien rice's "the blower's daughter", bebel giberto's bossa nova "mais feliz" in the exhibition & en english hit "how soon is now" by the smiths in the club.
