"une affaire de gout"
i believe that everyone would have thought about if there's someone looks like u, or has similar characters as u or if u will meet someone like another u.or someone like your soulmate who can understand & share same ideas as u.
there're always films about two similar ppl or identical tiwns, but stories b/w two females, e.g. french/ polish film "la double vie veronique" of kieslowski, japanese film "情書" by 岩井俊二" or amierican film "single white female", are the stories about 2 females, they shared similar or same looking, had some kind of unexplained connections in hearts etc.
"une affaire de gout" is the first one i saw, this topic abt 2 men, i would say this one is closer to "single white female", male version, less sexual, violent & thrilling but more freakly obsessive. it's not like single white female, while one tried to be alike another one, take over the other & then distroyed her. but this one is abt 2 men becomes one.
the story started with a young guy (nicholas) committed crime & the magistrate casted jean-pierre leaud investigated the case by interviewing different people, nicholas' gf, his collegues etc. it then flushed back to the scene while a rich sophisticated middle-aged man, frederic, having a meal in a restaurnt, asked the young waiter, nicholas, to taste his dish but not asked the chef/ manager about the dish. nicholas could immediately identify what was the special ingredients of that dish, frederic was so impressed, gave nicholas a name card & hired him as his personal - taster.
so, what should a taster do? first, he should be at the similar height & weight as frederic, wear the same size. second, he should wear the same style clothing & hair as him. third, he should have the same level of taste as him, esp. taste of food. whatever frederic hates to eat, the taste should hate to eat them 2, whatever he likes to eat, his taster should like that 2. frederic was allergic to cheese & fish bcos of an accident of his father, he made nicholas couldnt eat cheese & fish by medication. frederic likes tripes, so he let nicholas ate them often, made him like it.
perhaps, u would think, it's like a rich powerful big man tried to control over a young guy by high salary, for satisfying his sick arrogant manner or something. but then u would start to realize, it's not sth one-sidely imposed by frederic, but it's both side, as nicholas was willing to give a try, deeper & deeper try. what they were actually doing was, making each other more alike each other.
next, things went further, it wasnt only a matter of similar appearance or taste of food, not sth only physical, but sth psychological, the feeling, senses & tastes inside. as frederic was an older guy, sth he couldnt do or wouldnt do, when nicholas could do that, frederic would share all those feelings with him, as if frederic was experiencing the same things as well, their hearts were connected.
but taster is still a taster, nicholas slept with a woman, & then frederic slept with her next, nicholas knew that he was just a taster.
frederic was explicitly a freak, he was a little bit obessive-compulsorily disordered, he used to be so clean, washed his hand for slightly longer than normal people. he had claustrophobia, he couldnt be in lift nor in crowd. he was addicted to the youth & energy of nicholas.
& nicholas, he admired frederic, as a rich, experienced, sophisticated, powerful man. u could feel, yes, they loved each other, wanted to turn each other as similar as each other as they could. they were so addicted, couldnt live without each other - as they were made for each other.
when frederic broke his legs, nicholas knew very well, he could only feel what frederic felt if his legs were broken 2, so, nicholas broke his own legs.
at last, nicholas killed frederic as he was suffocated. when the psychologist asked why nicholas would accept doing all he could to be alike frederic, cos he thought, he never knew the limit with frederic, he wanted to know how far they could go.
film always becomes interesting while exploring the potential limit of pathological side of human.
