It's a film so human, so political, philosophic, societical & religious.
grace escaped from gangsters & arrived this dogville, tom tried to keep her in this town by letting her help everyone in town sth that they didnt necessarily need, for seeing if she could really do more good than harm, that is the condition of her staying. within the 2 weeks of this observation period, at first, ppl were reluctant to her offer of help, but bcos of the sincerity of grace, they started to accept her & let her help, there was a kind of friendliness developed among them but still there were certain ppl who didnt really seem to like grace. after 2 weeks, the time's come, they voted without the appearance of grace, she was ready to go, but the result was surprising, there was 15 votes for her staying, i was first so impressed by the acceptance of the town ppl, grace & even me as an audience was touched by this goodness of all of them.
grace continued to help & got along well with all the them, but the happy time didnt last long when ppl started to show the evilness of human beings, they started to count every single wrong thing that grace's done & ignored what how well she'd done for them, also sex abuse & harsh work pushed on her, even a child jason bullied her. later, the gangsters arrived the town again to post a warrant for arrest. in order to lessen the fear of town ppl, grace was forced to work for longer time with less paid. it's the condition for the staying of grace, she was willing to accept it. but once, when chuck's wife, june, knew abt the sexual desire of chuck on grace, for punishing, she broke the china dolls, the most precious things that grace struggled very hard to achieve in here, one by one in front of grace. facing all these, she's decided to leave this town, the only ones she could trust on were tom & ben who could help her to leave, tom took the money from his dad, she's packed up & paid the money for her transport to ben, the next day, she was ready, but dunno why, everyone in the town seemed to notice she was leaving & encouraged her to work for them or else. anyway, grace's decided to leave, nth could stop her, she was on the truck of ben, unfortuntely, even ben indeed had a desire on her, claimed it was the price she needed to pay for her leaving, so she let him, but even more unfortune was that ben at last sent her back to dogville. the eyes of everyone seeing her hiding on the truck were hard to put up with.
grace was forced to stay, being accused of stealing money from tom's dad innocently, she was put with a neckcuff, like a slave or more lively description, like a dog, to forbid her from escaping as the town ppl thought she was a person dangerous. more & more abuses, tom got the last plan, let her tell the truth of every sin of the ppl, but those ppl defended themselves, both grace & tom were exhausted. as the moral role of tom himself, he had to make a choice b/w the town ppl & grace, at last, he chose the "right thing" to report grace & chose to stand on the side of dogville ppl......
nowadays, we see that abuse in the film is inhuman, but, we cant deny that's more human than ever indeed. as human is composed of goodness & evilness. at first, ppl's acceptance seemed to show the goodness of mankind, but we actually dunno if they kept grace out of kindness or just bcos grace was a wishful thing for all of them, so they kept her with them for taking advantages. human's desire is unlimited, once u give them sth, they will ask for more from u. they knew grace wanna stay, so, she needed to pay for the price, they didnt treasure her indeed, just tried to make full use of her, took everything she'd done for them for granted. this is very human, later, dogville even eclipsed grace or she couldnt tolerate anymore, she said nasty words abt the bed-wetting of the handicapped gal.
it also exposes the jealousy of women, how they humiliated grace, punished her & how women revenged. perhaps, including men were also jealous, they all knew they were mediocre, could never be better than grace, so they did everything they could to put out the brightness of her.
this film is very political as well, the town ppl seemed to be in harmony from the very beginning cos all of them were in equal status, but when grace was here, they could exercise their power on her, power makes ppl more & more greedy, eclipses everyone. the same case, when grace got the power from her dad at last, she chose to shoot them all, even let june saw her children being killed one by one & shot tom with her hand, ppl in power would do whatever they can, there's no exception. grace said if there's no dogville, the world would be beautiful, but it's just too arrogant, uses a beautiful reason to justify her sin.
for the town ppl, they regarded grace as an outsider even after a certain period of time, she was a parasite in this town, she begged for staying, they never accepted her as one of them, but they used a very good excuse to defend themsevles "they're afraid of grace, they think she's a dangerous person", well, but i dont think they were in fear, if so, why didnt they let grace leave the town?
human always has a tendency of being lazy, sth that wasnt necessarily to be done by grace became sth so important from time to time, ppl seemed to need grace so much for working, they depended on her, perhaps, that's one of the reasons they didnt let grace leave. also, they were lazy to be kind to grace, it's easy to be mean to others, so they chose the easiest way. it's hard not to reckon the other's faults but forgive them, so they chose to blame grace often. maybe, grace would become them if she stayed there longer, who knows?
grace was a christ-like-charcter, she tried to be forgiving to everything the dogville ppl did to her, she did everything she could for them, did whatever they asked her to, was betrayed, was locked up (symbolised as crucified), was accused tho' she'd not done anything wrong. her forgiveness & tolerance were really unbearable. she chose to stay in the town but the price was just too high to pay. i dunno if human cant bear ppl being too kind, so they did everything they could to hurt grace, just like testing her limit of tolerance, pushing her to explode, maybe human being really has this kind of tendency.
tom was a character who could easily win your trust at the beginning, but finally, it showed that he was just a hypocrite, a pseudo-moralist, who saw everything of dogville ppl did to grace without protecting her, lied to the ppl & claimed he did so for the grace's & their own good & lied to his beloved grace & betrayed her at last, he was worse than anyone in the town.
at the end of the film, only a dog survives in dogville, maybe it implies, even a dog deserves to live, but not any human.
so, what is morality? forgive & tolerate everything may not be moral at all, but try our best under imperfect condition & never tolerate any unfair & unreasonable thing maybe sth appropriate to do.
now, i understand why tristan felt the film lingering in his mind after watching it, cos this film lingers in my mind every second, this is a film truly makes u think.
it exposes humanities, desire, laziness, greediness, selfishness, dishonestness, infaithfulness, jealousy, indifference... a fasinating journey of humanities despite of 3 hrs long. the drama setting of the film is fresh, lars von trier directed the film "the idiot" b4, truely an avant-garde director.
