Hammer mill

A hammer mill is a machinewhose purpose is to shred material into fine particles. They havemany sorts of applications in many industries, including:

Ethanol plants (corn)
Grinding used shipping pallets for mulch
Sawmills (sizereduction of trim scrap and planer shavings into boiler fuel ormulch)
A farm machine, which mills grain into coarse flour to befed to livestock.
Shredding paper.
Milling grain.
Shreddingscrap automobiles (see automotive shredder residue).

The concept is fairlystraightforward. A hammer mill is essentially a steel drum containinga vertical or horizontal cross-shaped rotor on which pivoting hammersare mounted. The hammers are free to swing on the ends of the cross. The rotor is spun at a high speed inside the drum while material isfed into a feed hopper. The material is impacted by the hammers onthe ends of the rotating cross and thereby is shredded and expelledthrough screens in the drum.

Slow speed horizontal palletgrinderSmall grain hammer mills can be operated on household current.Large automobile shredders can use one or more 2000 horsepower (1.5MW) diesel engines to power the hammer mill.

Wind mill

A windmill is a machine thatis powered by the energy of the wind. It is designed to convert theenergy of the wind into more useful forms using rotating blades orsails. The term also refers to the structure it is commonly built on.In much of Europe, windmills served originally to grind grain, thoughlater applications included pumping water and, more recently, generation of electricity. Recent electricity-generating versions arereferred to as wind turbines.

The most modern generations ofwindmills are more properly called wind turbines, or wind generators, and are primarily used to generate electricity. Modern windmills aredesigned to convert the energy of the wind into electricity. Thelargest wind turbines can generate up to 6MW of power (for comparisona modern fossil fuel power plant generates between 500 and 1,300MW).

With increasing environmentalconcern, and approaching limits to fossil fuel consumption, windpower has regained interest as a renewable energy source. It isincreasingly becoming more useful and sufficient in providing energyfor many areas of the world.

One area where turbines havebecome feasible is in the Midwestern United States, due to greatamounts of wind.
