柯瑞曾連續2年獲選為年度最有價值球員（MVP），生涯中5次率領金洲勇士闖進總決賽，更奪下3次總冠軍。今年勇士隊氣勢銳不可擋，目前戰績30勝11負，在西區暫居第2，再加上射手湯普森（Klay Thompson）傷癒回歸，今年很有機會衝擊季後賽。而柯瑞去年年底投進生涯第3千顆三分球，成為NBA史上的三分球王，讓他人氣更上一層樓，在明星賽票選第1階段拿下超過250萬票，目前已經累積超過446萬票，領先全聯盟，有機會挑戰人氣王寶座。
明星賽票數第2高的球員也在西區，薇湖人球星「詹皇」詹姆斯（LeBron James）以438萬票緊追在後。西區前場票數前3高的球員分別為湖人詹姆斯、金塊約基奇（Nikola Jokic）、勇士威金斯（Andrew Wiggins）；後場前2則是勇士柯瑞、灰熊莫蘭特（Ja Morant）。
東區部分，前場票數最高的前3名球員分別是籃網杜蘭特（Kevin Durant）、公鹿「字母哥」亞德托昆波（Giannis Antetokounmpo）、七六人恩比德（Joel Embiid）；後場由公牛德羅森（DeMar DeRozan）、老鷹T.楊恩（Trae Young）暫居前2。
第71屆NBA明星賽，將於2月21日在克里夫蘭舉行。明星賽先發球員由票選決定，計分上球迷投票佔50%，球員、媒體各占25%。最終東、西區得票數最高的球員將擔任隊長，並從候選名單中挑選球員組隊。
