How to teach student transportation

The class: Number of Student: 40
Grade Level: 12~14 yrs old students
Teaching aids: Write down all the materials you will use during the class.
For example:
1. B4 size map
2. Dialog
3. Flash cards ( bus stop, taxi stand, train station, transportation, block)
Context: Topic: Transportation
Content: 1.we will teach them how to ask simple questions about transportation.
2. Terms of transportation will be taught. Students will be able to gain different information on different type of transportation.
Aims: 1. Students will be able to recognize transportation name in English by the end of the course.
Anticipated problems: Students might not pay attention to T. the game might be too difficult to students.


Activity 1: Vocabulary teaching
Step 1: Tell students we are going to learn vocabulary of transportation.
Step 2: Teacher shows the flash cards of vocabularies.
Step 3: Teacher teach the vocabulary word by word
Step 4: Teacher write down the phrases on the blackboard.
Step 5: Teacher teach the phrases sentence by sentence.
Step 6: Teacher ask students to repeat after her.
Step 7: Finally review all of the vocabulary and phrases.
Conversation:
T: Hello everyone. Do you know the transportations that teacher Eliot and David performed just now?
S: Yes/No.
T: Good, now we are going to learn the vocabulary and the phrases.
S: Ok.
T: (Teacher shows each flash card to every student)
Everyone repeat after me when I read from the cards.
T: Bus
S: Bus
T: Good! Next, bus stop.
S: Bus stop.
T: Have you ever seen any bus stops?
S: Yes.
T: where can you see bus stops?
S: On the street.
T: Good! Is there anyone who knows how to take a bus?
S: Yes.
T: Very good. Next, train.
S: Train.
T: This is where the train stops. Train station.
S: Train station.
T: Ok. Have you ever taken a train before?
S: Yes.
T: This one is taxi.
S: taxi.
T: taxi stand.
S: taxi stand.
T: Ok. Let’s review it again. Pleas repeat after me.
T: bus
S: bus
ETC… (Teacher repeats the process one more time.)
T: Ok now I am going to teach you the phrases which is on the
blackboard. When I am teaching you please just repeat after me ok?
T: go along
S: go along
ETC… (Teacher reads from the board and students repeat.)
T: Wow, you guys did a great job. Let’s review it again.
T: go along
S: go along
ETC… (Teacher repeats the process one more time.)
T: alright. We have reviewed all the vocabulary and phrases. Later, teacher David and Eliot will teach you a dialog on transportation.


Activity 2: Dialog presenting + Chain Drill

Dialog:

A: Excuse me, how do I get to the school?
B: What transportation are you going to take?
A: Can I take a bus there?
B: Yes, of course, just take bus No5 and get off at David stop. Walk along Rum rd, when you cross Erin Street, You’ll see the school on your left-hand side.

Step1:

Teachers present the dialog without showing the script, students will be asked to listen carefully for the transportation terms taught in the last activity.

T: “Students, we will be presenting a dialog later. Please listen carefully and see if find the words you learned just now.”

Step2:

After presenting, teachers will check if the students heard the terms. The script will be shown as a aid to students.

T: “Ok now, can anyone tell me what words did you hear in the dialog?”
S1:” Bus Stop”
S2:”Train Station”
T: “Very good, how about phrases? Do you hear any phrases?”
S: “Yes! Yes!”
S1: The man told you to go along Rum rd.”
S2:” The man told you to take a bus and get off at a bus stop.”
ETC…

Step3:

Teachers carry out chain drill using the 2nd and 3rd sentence
“What transportation are you going to take?” “I am taking a bus/taxi/train” the drill continues for one rotation in each group.
T:” Ok, I am going to demonstrate a little practice for you, look carefully.
(T1: “What transportation are you going to take?” T2:”I am going to take a bus/taxi/train). Now, starting from each group, practice one by one, you can stop after one round.”

Step 4:

After practicing chain drill, the teachers check if the students are familiar with the usage of phrases again. Each will be asked to make 3 sentences using the terms. Teachers will collect the answers from them.

T: “I see you are already quite familiar with the term of transportation. Now, let’s see if you guys really understand how to use them. Discuss with your group and make 3 sentences using the terms you have learnt. I’ll collect the paper from you later”

End of activity, move to next “You go there”

Activity 3: “You go there”

Step1: Carry out activity “You go there”

Step2: Teacher explains the rules to students.

Step3: 3 groups of students will be asked to share their answer.

Conversation:

T: “We are going to have an activity called “You go there”

Ss: “(???)”

T: “Now, I’ll assign every group a destination. You and your group members will have to tell me how you will get there. You must use the terms you learned just now in your answers.”

S: “(Discussing + Discussing + Discussing)

T:”Time’s up! Now I want 3 groups to come up and tell me your route to the destination.”

S: “(Tells the answer)

T: “Very good, now let move on to the last activity “Guess what?”

Activity 4 “Guess what?”

Step 1: Explain to Ss how to play this activity.
Step 2: Ss design their own starting points and destinations.
Step 3: Ss will design their route using the same dialog structure.
Step 4: Ask Ss from each groups to come up and present their dialog, without telling their destination.
Step5: Ss from the other groups will have to guess the answer.

Conversation:
T: Hello! Ss. We are going to play another game. Do you like it?
S: Yeah! We want to play.
T: Ok! Now choose your own starting point and destination. You’ll have to design your own route, and it must look like the dialog just now.
S: Ok!
T: After you have finished designing, you’ll have to come up and tell us your route, but not your destination. The other groups have to guess where you are going.
S: Ok!
T: Listen carefully! You have to use the terms and sentence structures which we learned in the previous activities.
S: Ok!

T: Now, who want to be the volunteer?
S: Me, me, me…..

S1: Now, I am standing next to the 7-11. I will take bus No.6 and get off at Erin stop. Then, I will walk along and turn left on Rum Road. Where am I going?
T: Is there anyone who knows the answer?
S: Me, me, me… They are going to the drug store.
S1: Yes! You are right.
T: Very good! You guys did a good job.
