Guide to Stop Automatic Chrome Updates in Windows

Chrome employs the Google Update feature that in turn operates an open-source program called Omaha for auto-updating. Automatic update runs and checks for the latest version whenever you connect to the internet with 5 hours frequency. Automatic updates are suitable to keep your browser safe and secure up to date. The issue comes when there are changes in the functionalities. But there is a lot of embracement when you suddenly lose a feature you have been using for years. There is no option in Chrome for disabling this auto-update feature or reverting to an earlier browser version. So, we bring this blog to mention some methods to disable Chrome automatic updates in Windows.

 

Steps to Disable Automatic Chrome Update in Windows

You can do this in just a few steps for whatever reason you want to stop the automatic Chrome updates. This blog will take you through the two methods of disabling the Chrome auto-updates.

 

1.    Disable Automatic Chrome Update from Windows System Configuration 

·         Open the Run windows and type "msconfig" and press 'Enter' to open the panel of 'System Configuration.'

·         Now, on this window, select the "Services" tab. Then, uncheck the box "Hide all Microsoft services" option at the downside of the window.

·         Then, find the list of services and uncheck both "Google Update (gupdate)" and "Google Update (gupdatem)."

·         Further, click on the "Apply" and the "OK" button to save the changes.

·         When prompted to restart the system, click on "Restart" for the changes to take effect.

 

2.    Disable Chrome Updates from Windows Services Manager 

·         Launch the "Run" window and type "services.msc" and press 'Enter' to open the "Service Manager" window.

·         Alternatively, open "Control Panel" and select "System and Security," and scroll down, then click on "Administrative Tools."

·         Then, double click on "Services" to open the service manager window.

·         Look for "Google Update (gupdate)" and "Google Update (gupdatem)" on the list.

·         Double click on both (each at a time) and the "General" tab under "Startup Type" choose "Disabled" option then click ok.

·         Then, restart the system.

 

The automatic Chrome update isn't a drag for many users, but it's possible to stop them whenever you wish to. It's important to know that by disabling the Chrome updates, you'll be susceptible to serious security issues and, at the same time, missing some new helpful features. Moreover, you'll enable automatic updates by reversing the above procedures.
