第八十二屆奧斯卡金像獎提名典禮在美西時間二日，由美國影藝暨科學學院新任主席湯姆謝拉克和曾獲奧斯卡提名安海瑟薇共同宣佈。
第八十二屆奧斯卡金像獎最佳影片入圍電影
湯姆謝拉克和安海瑟薇於台北時間二日晚間九點半在超過四百名國際媒體參加的記者會上，宣佈二十四個獎項中的十項大獎。安海瑟薇曾以《瑞秋要出嫁》榮獲兩千零八年最佳女主角提名。所有獎項的入圍名單並同步發給媒體，且公佈於第八十二屆奧斯卡金像獎官方網站 (
www.oscar.com) 。
學院成員分別在所屬部門提名該項入圍者，而紀錄、實境、動畫與外語片部份則由專屬的委員會投票選出，所有的投票成員都有資格提名最佳影片。選票在稍早十二月寄給學院共五千七百七十七名成員，並將回覆郵寄的選票交給普華永道會計師事務所 (PricewaterhouseCoopers) 統計。
學院成員依各自所屬的委員會票選提名該項目的入圍影片。例如：演員提名演員項目，剪輯提名剪輯項目。除了最佳動畫長片與外語片項目，由另外組成的委員會投票提名。所有的成員皆可投票提名本屆的最佳影片，今年這個項目是自一九四三年後首次由五個入圍名額提高至十個名額。
提名的選票已於十二月時寄發給五千七百七十七位成員。而回寄的選票交由普華永道會計師事務所 (PricewaterhouseCoopers) 統計。
而所有獲得提名的影片，將於本周末在學院的塞繆爾戈爾德溫戲院舉行官方的映演。這些映演也將同時在好萊塢、倫敦、紐約與舊金山灣區的學院林伍德鄧恩戲院舉行。
學院中當然會員及終身會員都有資格票選所有得主，但包括最佳動畫短片、實景短片、紀錄短片、紀錄長片和外語片獎項，只有看完該項所有提名電影的會員，才有資格票選該項得主。
美國電影藝術暨科學學院獎將在太平洋時間三月七日頒給兩千零九年表現傑出的電影，並在好萊塢高地娛樂廣場中的柯達戲院®舉行頒獎典禮，美國廣播公司ABC 當天下午五點、東部時間晚間八點現場直播，今年的頒獎典禮將在超過兩百個國家同步轉播，其中台灣由 STAR MOVIES獲得轉播權，並於台北時間三月八日早上九點現場直播頒獎典禮，晚間九點中文字幕重播。
本屆奧斯卡首度由史提夫馬丁與亞歷鮑德溫兩位連決主持，史提夫馬丁曾經主持過第七十三與七十五屆奧斯卡頒獎典禮。而亞歷鮑德溫曾以《The Cooler》入圍奧斯卡最佳男配角。
