Sign a mayoral candidate nomination form

Jan Walters-Gleeson was booted from her role as a personal assistant to mayor Morris Cutforth and chief executive Mark Simpson when she signed the nomination form for former mayor, Stan Semenoff, who is again seeking the role.

Mr Cutforth is not standing again, and Mrs Walters-Gleeson - who previously worked for Mr Semenoff - said she did not believe she had a conflict of interest in nominating him, Radio New Zealand reports.

However, after telling council bosses she had signed the form, she was sacked for failing to be neutral.

Mrs Walters-Gleeson is fighting for reinstatement, and alleges the council breached her rights as an elector.

She says there are double standards in play because Mr Simpson's assistant was allowed to work on campaign material for a councillor who is seeking re-election.

The council said it was an employment matter, and would not make any comment to media.

United Future leader Peter Dunne urged the Electoral Commission to get involved and uphold Mrs Walters-Gleeson's rights as an elector, calling her dismissal is "a gross breach of her rights as a citizen to participate freely and fairly in the electoral process".

However, a spokeswoman for the Electoral Commission says the agency has no jurisdiction over the administration of local authority elections, and it is a matter for the council to resolve.

Local Government NZ president Lawrence Yule says there is a grey area around the issue.

While it is legal for a council employee to sign a nomination form, it is probably best for them to avoid doing so, he told Radio New Zealand.
