清朝皇帝之間流傳許多奇聞軼事，雍正皇帝的即位與駕崩，更是充滿謎團。據悉，雍正當時留下的遺韶就談到了關於繼位人選的問題，相較於他即位的種種爭議，雍正早已明確指定了乾隆作為接替者，但為何乾隆看到的瞬間，卻當場哭到不能自己呢？後人留下了兩種解釋。
雍正的遺韶究竟寫了什麼呢？原文如下：
寶親王皇四子弘曆，秉性仁慈，居心孝友，聖祖皇考於諸孫之中，最為鐘愛，撫養宮中，恩逾常格
文中只的四子弘曆，也就是乾隆的名字（愛新覺羅弘曆）。得知自己是即位者的瞬間，乾隆頓時大哭，原因有兩個：
第一「盡孝道」：
古人特別講究孝道，而作為帝王更是天下的表率，乾隆皇帝必須要不停地哭，要哭給大臣看，更要哭給天下的百姓看。當然，雖說帝王之家無親情，但是雍正對乾隆確實相當疼愛，當然也可能是真情流露，表達對於父王的懷念之情。
第二「喜極而泣」：
放眼整個滿清，除了後期溥儀之外，乾隆登上皇位相對簡單的皇子，不用經歷雍正當年，所謂的九龍奪嫡的爭鬥，不用擔心被自己的兄弟奪走，也不用擔心繼位後被報復，老早就是內定的。
然而，雍正皇帝當了13年皇帝就駕崩，乾隆25歲繼承皇位。有一種說法認為，乾隆本來期望的過程，是雍正會像康熙一樣當很久才交棒，萬萬沒想到，自己25歲就當上皇帝，因而感到喜極而泣。
