蔡頭去年不敵癌症病魔過世，曾和他在秀場多次合作過的胡瓜28日在年末餐敘上透露，上次碰到蔡頭是去年3月，一起同台錄影，當時完全看不出蔡頭有異樣。小禎也同意：「他在節目中很活潑，非常搞笑。」
胡瓜與蔡頭的緣分源自於藝工隊，他回憶當時知道有個很厲害的人叫「蔡斯文老師」，每次比賽幾乎都拿冠軍，但兩人直到後來在節目中碰到才認識。胡瓜笑說：「聽名字叫蔡斯文，感覺很高大。」後來他們活躍於秀場，蔡頭時常向胡瓜抱怨被費玉清惡整，晚睡的費玉清時常大半夜挖蔡頭起床，藉著吃宵夜的名義把蔡頭載到林口，「說這塊地是他（費玉清）的。」
得知蔡頭過世的消息後，胡瓜感嘆蔡頭的個性向來報喜不報憂，很少談論自己負面的事情，「看起來都很樂觀。」胡瓜甚至沒意識到蔡頭已經71歲，「以為他大我2、3歲而已。」
