副詞子句 (精簡版)

1. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb.
2. An independent clause is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of a sentence.
3. A dependent clause is NOT a complete sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause.
4. Adverbial clauses are dependent clauses. They can NOT stand alone as a sentence in written English. They must be connected to an independent clause.
5. Words that introduce adverbial clauses are called “subordinating conjunctions.”

1. She met an old friend while she was taking a walk.
2. When the police came, she was taking a shower.



B. Condition

1. If you turn to the right, you will see the bank.
2. You will not pass the exam unless you study harder.



C. Reason

1. She can’t attend the meeting because she is sick.
2. Since we don’t have enough money, we can’t buy the house.



D. Purpose

1. I got up early so that I might be in time for the train.
2. He walked fast lest he should be late for work.



E. Result

1. Jason is so hungry that he can eat a horse.
2. He is such a nice boy that everyone likes him.



F. Concession

1. Although she is rich, she works very hard.
2. He is strong though he is very old.



G. Comparison

1. She is younger than I am.
2. You are less intelligent than he is.



H. Manner

1. Do in Rome as the Romans do.
2. He talks as if he knew everything.



I. Extent

1. As far as I know, she is a very good student.
2. So far as this matter is concerned, time is crucial.



J. Place

1. Where there is a will, there is a way.
2. Stay where you are.
