1. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. An independent clause (or main clause) is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of a sentence.
2. A dependent clause (or subordinate clause) is NOT a complete sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause.
3. A phrase is a group of words that does NOT contain a subject and a verb.
4. A noun phrase is used as a subject or an object.
5. A noun clause is used as a subject or an object. In other words, a noun clause is used in the same ways as a noun phrase.




A. Subject

1. That Jason is sick is true.
2. Who she was is not important.
3. Whether I like him or not is noun of your business.
4. Whatever you do is O.K. with me.



B. Object

1. I know (that) she is sick.
2. They don't understand why she did this.
3. Cecilia showed me how she had done it.
4. Please tell me whether you want to come or not.



C. Complement

1. The fact is that she is sick.
2. The truth is that nobody likes you.



D. Appositive

1. The fact that she is sick is known to everyone.
2. The report that he had been killed was really shocking.
3. The notion that men are wiser than women seems deep-rooted.





1. That子句不得置於in或except以外的任何介係詞之後。
2. 名詞子句常置於”宣告之動詞”後，如：argue, assert, know, report, confirm, indicate, show, conclude等等。
3. 由that引導之名詞子句，表確定的事實；由疑問詞(when, where, why, how, whether等等)引導之名詞子句，表不確定的問題。
