To tread a fine line between

Zenobia: There goes Jane on her morning run.

Jacindo: She's been doing it every day for three years now.

Zenobia: Yes, she's very keen on keeping fit. She wants to be as healthy as possible.

Jacindo: She told me yesterday that she was going to start running in the evenings, as well as mornings and evenings on weekends too.

Zenobia: Is that right? She isn't an athlete, is she? Don't you think she's doing too much?

Jacindo: She may be.

Zenobia: Well I think she's treading a fine line between enthusiasm and obsession as far as her running is concerned.

A fine line的fine,不可解作「好」,而應解作「細微」,一如a fine powder(細粉末)、fine rain(微雨)、a fine distinction(細微的分別)等的fine字。A fine/thin/narrow line between two things是指兩件事物之間相同而難以分辨的地方,例如﹕There is a fine line between art and pornography(藝術和色情,有時很難分辨)。

說某人tread/walk a fine line between two things,等於說其所為目前不能算不恰當,但很容易就會過分,例如﹕Japan is walking a fine line between patriotism and militarism(日本正在愛國主義和軍國主義之間徘徊)。

「在周末」,傳統英式英語會說at the weekend,但美國和澳洲英語則會說on the weekend。英國人受外國影響,現在也往往用on,例如﹕I must do the garden on the weekend(這個周末,我必須整理一下花園)。

例如﹕(1) I am not very keen on fishing(我不大熱中釣魚)。(2) He is not keen about the idea of emigrating to Taiwan(他對移居台灣的主意,不大感到興趣)。此外,英式英文常用keen on someone來說「熱戀某人」,例如﹕He is keen on my sister(他熱戀我妹妹)。
