Queen enjoys first Wimbledon visit for 33 years
Thursday, 24 June 2010

The Queen has enjoyed her first visit to Wimbledon for 33 years, watching Britain's No.1 Andy Murray win in straight sets on Centre Court after he and opponent Jarkko Nieminen observed traditions and bowed to the Royal Box before the start of play.

Wearing at urquoise summer coat and matching brimmed hat with white trim, the Queen took her place in the Royal Box at 1pm, for the first time since she came to the All England Club in 1977 to watch Virginia Wade win the final in Silver Jubilee year.

Wade remains the last British player to win a singles title here and she was invited to sit in the row behind the Queen in the Royal Box, along with two other former British ladies who have claimed the Wimbledon title - Ann Jones(1969) and Angela Barrett (1961). Tim Henman, who reached four semi-finals in five years, made up a trio of former British tennis stars in the party.

The Queen had arrived at the grounds two hours earlier and was presented with a purple and white posy of hydrangea, agapanthus, peony and roses by ball girl Marianna Spring, 14.Then accompanied by HRH the Duke of Kent, in his role as the presidentof the Club, as well as Tim Phillips CBE, the Chairman of the AELTC, the Queen took a walk around the ground, giving fans who had queued for hours for a ground pass the chance to see her.

After a short walk, the royal party stopped by Court 14, where a special green carpet has been laid, and she watched as a group of young players, who arepart of the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative players, practised their skills under the instructions of Dan Bloxham, the head coach of the AELTC.

After the Queen had watched for a few minutes, Bloxham broke off from the training session to be introduced to Her Majesty; he then introduced the juniors, who had lined up to bow and curtsey, to gentle "aahs" from the assembled audience.

The Queen was then taken to the Millennium Building where a number of top players were waiting to be presented. Multiple champions Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King represented a generation of players who were in action the last time the Queen had visited.

Then the top four seeds in the ladies'  singles - Serena and Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic - and three leading male players- Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick - were introduced to the Queen. Roddick, who was wearing a smart white blazer, received the invitation because fourth seed Andy Murray was warming up for his 1pm match on Centre Court in front of the Queen.

Rafael Nadal was also invited but said it was impossible to attend as he too was preparing for his match. He later stressed that he had great respectfor the British royal family and for Wimbledon's traditions but said: "Today is a game day. I had my things to do."

British players Laura Robson, Heather Watson, Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha were also introduced.

Afterlunch in the Clubhouse, where she was presented with miniature versions of the men's and ladies' trophies as a memento of her visit, there wasa spontaneous standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd as the Queen entered the Royal Box. The national anthem was not played.

At the end of the match, which ended 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to Murray, both players were presented to the Queen on the members' balcony, in front of the crowds on the main concourse below. She then left via the main Club house entrance and was driven away.

In her 58-year reign, Her Majesty has visited Wimbledon on four occasions - the others being 1957, 1962 and, of course, 1977.

And it is a place to which, as well as being its patron, she has a very special link. Her father George VI, a keen tennis player, actually competed in the men's doubles tournament here in 1926, the year of the Queen's birth.

His Majesty was the Duke of York at the time and teamed up with Commander Louis Greig, but the pair was well beaten in the first round by Arthur Gore and Herbert Barrett.
