Mt. Huouyan

It is located between Sanyi and Yuenli town. Geographically, it belongs to the south part of Miaoli hill, the top of the hill (602m). According to geology, many hundred thousands years ago, during an orogeny, the Philippine plate was dashed against the Eurasia plate, eventually sediment was risen to be mountains. That was what Mt. Huoyan was formed also the reason why its structure different from volcano type which hot magma rises to the surface. It is softer composing of gravel and sand.
Monsoon and rain have been eroding the mountains so its surface sandy soil was gone and appeared bare gravel. Under the sun, the infertile land seems like in blazing flame, therefore, it got a name of Mt. Huoyan; Huo’s meaning in Chinese is represent fire.
its geological structure make it a dangerously steep cliff and precipitous terrain. Besides, the peak grows the naive Chinese red pines that have ecology and landscape value.

Tsaochiao is surrounded by mountains and has a European style garden, 50 hectares in size. A popular TV show, Bai zhan bai sheng, shot in Shangri-la paradise for years.

Burning wood to make charcoal was an important industry in Miaoli County. In order to publicizing traditional value, village using charcoal as a subject to build vocational suits, Canadian wood houses, conference rooms; the supplements inside of building also made of wood coal such as plants, cream shower, shampoo. There is also a hot spring SPA building which including various charcoal spring pools. Besides charcoal facilities, there are also indoor rock climbing, conference room, banquet hall that combine entertainment and business functions. The village plants herbs, wild vegetables and many wild animals can be seen there. A 30 year old coal kiln next to village is still workable and open for public. The owner explains the structure of kiln and the process to make coal that is full of cultural education value.

Wenchang emperor’s ritual was beginning in 1882, after Xinjiang, Taiwan was next to be set as a province in 1884. Two gentlemen, Juchun-Lin and Wanquing-Chen, suggested that set Taiwan a province, meanwhile, they solicited for funds to build Wenchang temple expecting it be the cultural center. It was finished next year. The temple sits northwest toward southeast, a typical Chinese architecture, 3 “Jian” in size’, (Jian is the measurement in Chinese architecture that distance between 2 columns is called a Jian.) 2 dragons aside. In front of temple has a wall that is a barrier between temple and outside the world to protect its in peace and tranquil. The wall has 2 simple and graceful doors in both ending. It never changed since it was built. In 1985, the ministry of interior declared a historic spot with a third class rank. It mainly dedicated Wenchang emperor alone with Confucius; the Chinese character inventor, Changjie, is on the right; a great poet, Hanyu, is on the left.
In Chinese “pen”temple (opposite with sword temple) are usually dedicated Wencang, Confucius and Changjie. Beause Hanyu, a poet, is in leading position in Hakka culture; Therefore, this temple is also dedicated him. In 1889, Taiwan became a province, delightful folks instituted “outstanding school” using Changjie room as classroom. Today, a hanging Bronze bell was engraved words outstanding school that recounts old philosophers advocated education.

It is dedicated Heaven’s queen, Mo niang-Lin, Maju, the most popular deity in Hen. Hakka village usually believed in San guan da di, San sha guo wang and Guan sheng di jun. Maju was rare to be seen, the exception in Miaoli also Wulung temple in Hsihu town. Heaven’s queen temple is older than Wulung. It initiated from pioneer days for gratitude to Maju who blessed them safely sailing to Taiwan. 2 gentlemen, Zhu yun-Jiang and Zhao gu- He solicited for funds then set up the temple in 1816.
It is popular draw many disciples not less than other traditional Hakka temple. It had repaired many times, so still keep in magnificent feature. Not only a place can not miss by disciples also for people who like to discover history and seek showplace.

It belongs to Taoism, one of importation faith in Miali county. “ Guan sheng di jun” is primarily dedicated, alone with Fudyou emperor(Liu dong bin), Siming emperor, Guanyin, Chenghuanghye. It was named Po tang shia iu ching temple in 1906 and ruined by an awful earthquake in 1935. Until 1967, re-built it again and changing administer organization into a juridical person.
