騎士上周擊敗尼克，但攝影機拍到第3節詹姆斯犯規後，對著隊友「咆哮」。那場比賽騎士打完半場落後10分，詹姆斯咆哮當下落後7分，他用「兒童不宜」的字眼質問隊友，「你們到底要不要打球？」

隔天騎士在延長賽以3分之差敗給公鹿，中斷8連勝。詹姆斯說，球隊很「好」，但還不「出色」。

湯普森則為他緩頰，「這就是我們希望領導者做的事，如果不是他來鞭策我們，還有誰會這麼做？」

湯普森雖然夏天為了合約問題與騎士鬧得滿城風雨，但他回歸後，顯然很快進入狀況，「我們不能總是想著上季辦到的一切，這是個全新的球季，各隊都變得更強。」
