Greetings - Self-Adhesive Booklet
15 April 1998

The need to stay in touch with our family and those we care for is a fundamental part of our humanity and our civilisation. But what we communicate, and how we choose to do so, very much reflect the influences of personality, culture and situation.

As our lives continue to become faster in an ever-changing world the need to 'stay in touch' becomes even more important. We need to maintain relationships and forge bonds with those close to us.

A handful of the more traditional methods of greeting and staying in contact with other members of humanity is captured in this issue of ten 40c stamps. The hongi, the kiss, the high five and others in this issue reflect the diversity of ways New Zealanders choose to convey their emotions to one another. Even the stamps in this issue symbolise staying in touch. Since 1 May 1840, when the first adhesive postage stamp went on sale, one of the easiest ways of all to communicate with someone you care for has been by sending them a letter.
